What You Can Learn From Talking To A 90-Year Old

2016-09-25-1474825017-4549814-L1010393.jpg
Pretty good shape for 90 – must be those G&Ts

Last week we celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday.

There was a time when even getting to 90 was a major achievement, and if someone were lucky enough to make it to 90, they were generally frail, wheelchair bound and barely aware of the celebration going on around them.

I remember when my great grandmother hit 90. She was in a nursing home, bent over, in a wheelchair. She barely knew where she was, or who she was. That was some time ago.

For my father-in-law, Ken Pattenden, nothing could be further from the truth. The man still stands a lean and wiry six foot plus (as I am only 5’6″, I find this alone intimidating), has a full head of hair, a crushing handshake, an athlete’s build and more than all his marbles. I suppose it’s a tribute to genetics and clean living.

In any event, to celebrate the event, we all gathered in one of those massive old English country houses (did I mention that he lives in the UK?), and gathered the family for a weekend long party.

Ken was born in 1926, (you don’t have to be a math major to have figured that one out), one year before Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s flight took 33½ hours in a tiny, one-seater, single engine plane made of wood and cloth, lacking even a front window. It was hailed as the ‘wonder of the world’.

Our trans-Atlantic flight took about 6 hours. We slept most of the way in the reclining beds and we watched a movie. They also served us two meals. Lindbergh brought along some sandwiches.

The world has changed a lot since 1927, when Lindbergh made his historic flight. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.

This remarkable transformation, all of it, took place within my father-in-law’s lifetime.

At dinner, I asked Ken about his experiences in the Second World War. He served in the British navy, assigned to Alexandria, in Egypt. At that time, Britain was still the British Empire and Britain ruled one-quarter of the world’s surface and also ruled one-quarter of the world’s population. Today, they are down to a few islands, and maybe Scotland, if they stay lucky.

But, prior to the war and signing up with the Navy, Ken had grown up and lived in London. This was during the Blitz, the German bombing of the city, and he recounted that as well – walking past houses that had been simply blown to oblivion overnight, and never knowing when or if you were going to get hit.

As we chatted, his wife of 60 plus years, Anne, who was sitting next to him also joined in.

She recalled that as a child in a small English village, they had no running water. Her mother had to go to the well in the center of the village and fill jugs each day. They had no central heating – all of the heat, and the cooking, was provided by an open fire. They had no indoor plumbing, but rather an outhouse behind the house. And no electricity, at least in the earliest days. They had no refrigerator, but instead an ice box that would, when it was available, be stocked with a block of ice to keep food cool.

She remembered the first car in the village, the first phone. She went on to become a head teacher. Ken became an accountant.

The transitions in the course of their lives, from the time they were born until the present is, well, mind-boggling. The changes they have seen and personally experienced represent a transformation so massive that, frankly, personal computers and iPhones (he is quite good with his), which we think of as major are, in fact, minor events.

When Ken and Anne were born, the world was, in many ways, far closer to what it had been for more than 500 years in the past, maybe a thousand. Most transport was done by animal power or walking. Agriculture was largely driven by animal power as well. Modern medicine was virtually unknown. You could die of a simple infection. Penicillin only came into public use in 1942! Last year Ken had laser cataract surgery and a few years before, an artificial replacement knee.

Automobiles, airplanes, telephones, refrigeration, running water, central heating, electricity, modern medicine, television, radio – the changes that their one lifetime has encompassed was probably the greatest transformation that any generation has ever seen, or for that matter, is ever likely to see.

We like to complain that ‘things are bad’. This is particularly true in this election cycle. Things are terrible. Things have never been worse.

What we are lacking is a sense of history.

Talk to a 90 year old the next chance you get. I think you will see that things are not quite so bad after all.

Food Energetics: The Spiritual, Emotional, and Nutritional Power of What We Eat

Explains how food imparts a living wisdom that is separate from the science of nutrient values Offers an approach to diet from the perspective of ancient peoples, who understood how the energetic qualities of food affect both physical and spiritual health Includes a comprehensive catalog of the energetic properties of myriad foods-from chicken, beef, and potatoes to garlic, avocados, zucchini, and grapefruitFood is more than simply fuel. It imparts a living wisdom that is beyond the science and mechanics of calories, grams, and nutrient values. Ancient peoples, through their relationships with the plants and animals providing their food, understood that their food conveyed the unique energetic qualities of its source, such as swiftness from wild deer and groundedness from root vegetables. With the rise of agribusiness and industrial food production, people have become disconnected from the sources of their food and are no longer able to register the subtle rhythms, harmony, and energies that food can convey. This separation has thrown the basic human-food relationship out of balance-to the detriment of human consciousness. In Food Energetics, Steve Gagné shows how to revitalize our connection to food and remedy our physical and psychic imbalances with the wisdom of food energetics. He provides a comprehensive catalog of foods and their corresponding energetic properties and explains how each food affects us at the deepest spiritual level. By demonstrating how to plan meals that incorporate both dominant and compliant foods, he shows how to provide truly healthy cuisine that nourishes the body and the soul.

Charlotte Police Release Portion Of Video Of Keith Scott Shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ― The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department released partial video footage on Saturday of the police shooting of Keith Scott earlier in the week.

Scott was killed by police Tuesday in an incident described very differently by police and witnesses. A graphic video released on Saturday, which appears to be police body camera footage of the incident, shows an officer trying to gain access to Scott’s vehicle. It captures the moments after Scott goes down, but the shooting itself is obscured.

A second video, reportedly shot from a police dashboard camera, shows an officer firing at Scott after he exits his vehicle. The graphic and disturbing footage shows the moment Scott falls on the ground.

It’s not clear from that video whether Scott was carrying a gun, but police released photos of a gun they say they recovered at the scene.

Police also released a more detailed explanation of the incident, claiming that Scott was wearing an ankle holster and had a marijuana “blunt,” which they provided a picture of.

In a press conference held prior to the videos’ release, Putney doubled down on earlier accusations that Scott was armed and noted that there were other factors, including possession of marijuana, that led to a “compelling reason to start the encounter.”

He did note, however, that there’s no clear evidence that Scott pointed a gun at an officer.

He absolutely was in possession of a handgun,” Putney said. “There was no definitive visual evidence that he had a gun in his hand and that he pointed it at an officer. That I did not visually see in the video … When [my officers] see a weapon and they see the marijuana they say ‘uh oh, this is a threat to the public.’”

Putney said that officers are “absolutely not being charged” from his end, but that independent investigations are ongoing. He said that not all of the footage in police possession would be released Saturday, but that more would be released in the future.

After Scott’s wife, Rakeyia, released her own cellphone recording of the shooting on Friday, pressure grew for the city to release footage from cameras mounted in police cars and worn by officers.

In Rakeyia’s video, she can be heard telling officers that her husband has a brain injury and that he isn’t carrying a weapon.

Protesters marched through Charlotte Saturday, chanting “no tapes, no peace” and “take our lives we’ll keep our money.” Just as activist groups gathered at Marshall Park for the procession, word came down through the grapevine that Charlotte City Council was bending to pressure releasing the tapes alongside the state Bureau of Investigation.

The federal Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the shooting, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Local and national politicians, including Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, had joined the chorus of Americans demanding the recordings by Friday night.

”It’s a shame that it took so much public pressure, locally and nationally to release the tapes to the public. How can we trust a policing system and a government that needs so much pressure from the community to do the right thing?” Marcus Bass, a local activist who marched with Charlotte Uprising on Saturday, told The Huffington Post. “The community will continue to investigate on its own and justice may be found at the courthouse and the ballot box.”

Local and state authorities who have access to the recordings didn’t immediately return calls for comment. On Friday, Charlotte police told HuffPost that there was no timeline on the release of the videos, saying that the State Bureau of Investigation had jurisdiction over them.

Meanwhile, a second witness video of the incident made the rounds on Saturday, appearing to show officers cuffing Scott after they shot him.

The scene is obscured by foliage and the officers, but Scotts legs can be seen on the ground as officers ask one another if they’re OK.

Vital Lessons Learned From The Chelsea Bombing From A Chelsea Psychologist

The following post was created for Self-Therapy Month at Techealthiest. This is Part One.

When frightening events like the Chelsea bombing and the additional planting of nine other bombs from New Jersey to New York occur, we have no choice but to create a mental file in which to place our thoughts, feelings and images associated with the attack.

It has to be stored in your memory one way or another.

Those of us who live or work in New York City have been more directly affected by this nerve-shaking attack, but its explosive effects are, without a doubt, far-reaching, as news, commentary and images have been repeatedly catapulted from the media toward our eyes and ears, which essentially forces us to make sense of what happened.

At worst, you’ve been vicariously traumatized by the bombing (or directly traumatized if you were on 23rd Street that Saturday night). The more common reaction among is to be shaken and disturbed in the days following the bombing, followed by a few weeks of talking about the bombing with your social and work circles.

Social media essentially guarantees that you’ll have to grapple with disturbing thoughts about the attack, but for how long will  these thoughts linger in your mind?

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering since the event occurred: What is considered a “healthy” way to reflect upon the Chelsea bombing way after the event, as well other terror attacks that have occurred (and God forbid might happen again)?

Here are four things to be remembered about the attack that will promote health and personal responsibility.

1) Use the memory of this event to remind you of all that you currently have, most notably things that money can’t buy.

You actually are rich because you have everything you need right now. Dare to be more thankful than you’ve been of late. Let the memory of the terror attack spark a feeling of gratitude toward the people in life who are invested in your happiness AND the people who don’t seem invested in your happiness.

It’s just too easy to lose touch with what matters most. Life can change in a split second. Don’t forget that but it’s not healthy to think about this idea all of the time because it can turn to anxiety if it becomes an obsession.  See this horrible event as a beautiful opportunity to be reminded of all that you have, especially your freedom, friends, health, family or whatever matters most to you.

2) Think twice…three times…a thousand times about the consequences of spreading hatred before you utter a single word.

There are two hugely important points here. First, on a personal level, when you spread hatred, you’re killing the cells in your body. You lose. A part of you dies. The spread of word venom is an artificial way to expand your ego by diminishing others. It certainly makes you depressed and it pushes people away from you, except for people who either are as angry as you are or whose lives are devoid of meaning and are looking for something to believe in.

Second, the expression of hatred on the web can cause real harm to people. There are people out there who feed off of hatred. Keep in mind that social media creates a thunderclap that spreads like wildfire through the web. For people who feel powerless, this is a place to gain a synthetic sense of power. Hatred on social media spreads like cancer, and makes everyone sick.

Please know that if you’re constantly ranting on Facebook about Trump or Clinton or any person or group with whom you have a major problem, most of your “friends” are viewing you as crazy. They probably contemplated defriending you, but they’re either lazy or they don’t want to have to randomly face your scariness in the supermarket or at your next high school reunion. Instead, they’ve subtly unfollowed you and connected your current venomous behavior to a past memory of you being something negative. Please know that I’m referring to the expression of hatred, not anger, the latter of which can often be healthy and productive to express.

3) The collective American attention span is shrinking at an alarming rate.

The speed at which information travels makes us more likely to be satiated at a faster rate. In other words, you’ve probably been bombarded by news of the bombing so much that you eventually either tune it out completely or you go numb when you hear about it. The danger here is that you’re likely to miss the value inherent in remembering what happened and what could have been.

How do you counter a natural tendency for your emotional reactions toward the Chelsea bombing to become watered down as a result of social media satiation? At minimum, make a reminder to mention the bombing at your next major family, religious or other gathering. Talk about the event in terms of how it affected you and what you now feel thankful for. Another strategy is to find a way to express your thoughts and feelings about the event though a creative modality that you repeat even months after the disturbing event. For example, if you dabble in acrylic art, create a series of paintings over time which serve as an expression of your inner experience of the incident.

4) Crowdsourcing is a weapon against terror.

Yes, social media (and the media in general) spread hatred, false beliefs and dangerous calls to action faster than the world as ever known. How little it takes for an individual to incite violence on the web is scary, but various forms media can also (obviously) be used to spread good and inform people of important developments. Case in point: the capture of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the Chelsea bomber. Harry Bains had been watching CNN, which allowed him to recognize Rahimi who was sleeping next to Bain’s bar in Linden, New Jersey. This is loosely an example of how crowdsourcing can aid in spreading valuable information to combat terror.

Who knows what the next incident will be? Use the internet as a way to inform people if something suspicious is happening in front of you. You have the loudest megaphone ever created in the form of Twitter and Facebook.

There’s much more to say here, but it’s time to digest and return to this topic soon. This essentially reflects the optimal strategy. Ponder the horrible events that occurred. Learn from it. Vow to appreciate life more at least in the short term. Move on but return to it at a later date. Just don’t forget.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my lessons learned from the Chelsea bombing.

Integrator Alert: Demand Time (and Changes) in the FDA’s Move Limiting Access and Increasing Costs of Dietary Supplements

Removal of many dietary supplements from the market. Increased prices for patients and consumers. Limited access to key nutritional tools for practitioners who have used them safely for decades.

Charges like these against a proposal of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have propelled many Paul Revere rides through the alternative and integrative medicine community. One wonders with blasts against the FDA if it is “wolf” that is being cried.

2016-09-24-1474737510-3070699-FDA213X110.gif

Best assessment: not this time. I received an urgent email from long-time Integrator adviser Michael Levin of Health Business Strategies. Levin’s executive roles over the past 4 decades have included positions with pharma companies, medical device firms, as well as supplements firms. He’s a level headed analyst. He pointed to a perspective of the Council for Responsible Nutrition:

“Collectively the draft FDA Guidance can be viewed as a variety of maneuvers by the FDA to re-characterize as many dietary supplements as possible as [New Dietary Ingredients] and then propose a standard of proof for their safety that few manufacturers would be able to meet; one that Congress and the courts clearly did not intend to be applied to dietary supplements.”

Urge the FDA to add a 120 day extension to the comment period

At issue is Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376: “Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry.” The present comment period ends October 11. Levin urges all organizations with a stake in the industry to make their voices heard.

The first step: request a 120 day extension to allow a regulation of this importance to be thoroughly vetted. A draft letter of request is affixed below.

2016-09-24-1474753206-6563239-CRNJointHeader120611400x105.jpg

CRN wasn’t acting alone. It signed a joint statement with the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). The group of organizations called for “an overhaul” of the guidance. Best estimates are that compliance will cost the industry $ 2-billion to $ 6-billion a year. These costs that will be passed through to patients and consumers.

Levin is realistic about the challenges the guidance poses for anyone not intimately involved with manufacturing and sourcing processes. He warns that “this highly technical regulatory guidance document is very complex.” One example: if the guidance were adopted, a manufacturing change will trigger new dietary ingredient (NDI) status which, due to routine manufacturing processes, “essentially will put most botanical extracts into NDI territory.” If so, this would add substantially to regulatory burden, and cost.

For these reasons Levin, pictured below, “encourage(s) all practitioner-stakeholders to request a 120 day extension on the comment period (now due on 10/11/16) to allow a careful review.” In his view, “medical doctors, pharmacists, naturopathic doctors and other healthcare practitioners should review this guidance and consider how it may impact their ability to prescribe safe nutritional interventions to help their patients.”

2016-09-24-1474754646-3300244-levinmichael2015.jpg

Levin urges all who are affiliated with professional organizations or institutions linked in any way to supplement use to respond – and also send copies of their letters to US Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA)

If guaranteeing safety is the FDA’s primary concern, attacking the dietary supplement manufacturing is roughly like the IRS seeking to balance the budget by auditing people who make under $ 50,000 a year. With a significant percent of the estimated 251,000 medical deaths a year linked to pharmaceutical use, maybe a better use of the FDA’s team on this project would be to set them to mining in a deeper vein of public harm than to making more expensive the agents people are using instead of pharmaceuticals.

Bottom line: Levin’s call for an extension makes sense. No need for the FDA to rush on this one. Get your request for an extension and comments in!

Sample Letter Requesting a 120 Day Extension

Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

The revised draft guidance for New Dietary Ingredients (NDIs)

Re: Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

This is to respectfully request a 120 Day extension for comment period on this draft guidance.

As written, the guidance raises very serious questions about the future availability of safe dietary supplements recommended by healthcare practitioners to help patients maintain and improve their health.

Physicians, doctors and pharmacists use nutrient repletion and targeted nutritional interventions to improve the health status of the patients we serve. In so doing, our patients can live healthier lives. Evidence also exists that these nutritional interventions may reduce healthcare costs, safely.

Since this guidance is highly technical and appears to have a high likelihood of impacting the practice of nutritional medicine, we simply need more time to study, understand and consider how this guidance might impact our ability to help the patients we serve. The issues of manufacturing changes, ODIs vs NDIs, the position on synthetic botanicals, the cost of redundancy of NDINs and how that might impact innovation, product availability, consumer prices and ingredient availability are some of the issues that need careful exploration. Products on formularies will need to be reviewed to determine how this guidance, if adopted, would impact their availability.

Please extend the comment period by (at least) 120 days (to February 11, 2017) so that we may evaluate the impact this important guidance may have on public health and safety, in general, and the patients we serve, in particular.

Thank you.

Sincerely

How To Tackle Terrorism: Iran’s Rouhani vs. Prince Muhammad Bin Nayef

The top priority of world leaders gathered at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 71), was combating global terrorism. The United Nations is a platform that can rally global and multi-lateral support, cooperation and efforts for counterterrorism. Although other topics were discussed, the critical question of the day shared by many nations was, as a global community, how could we battle terrorism?

A constructive, multilateral and modern approach is needed to battle modern methods of terrorism conducted by state or non-state actors.

Action needs to be taken, however the most non-productive approach would be to make accusations or play the blame game. It wastes time, incites rivalries, and only feeds the very violence that we are trying to overcome. For instance, Iran’s approach of pointing fingers at everyone- except for the Iranian government, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), its staunchest ally Assad, and its proxies- is not a solution. It is a simplistic, short-sighted approach that can only lead to failure. In his UNGA speech, President Rouhani blamed the world powers for terrirosm. Such behavior strengthens animosity between countries at a time when the entire global community needs to work together to stop further bloodshed.

The countries that Iran is demonizing and blaming for all acts of global or domestic terrorism are the US, the UK, and Saudi Arabia, among others. Contradicting this is the fact that each of these countries has contributed various resources in the battle against terrorism whether Iran agrees with it or not. Again, the issue is not as simplistic as the Islamic Republic attempts to project it.

Let’s take one country- The Kingdom- that Iran is vehemently blaming, for example. All the points and data that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef gave at his speech on Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly, are factually correct whether Iran disagrees with it or paint it differently. For example, to combat radicalism, according to Prince Mohammed bin Nayef his country “has launched Mohammed bin Nayef Counseling and Care Center and its top clerics have been issuing religious edicts prohibiting terrorism or joining terror groups. Saudi has been attacked by terrorists more than 100 times…[Riyadh] is now part of 12 international agreements to fight terrorism,” and it heads in “partnership” with the United States and Italy a group combating ISIS funding. Addressing underdevelopment is crucial as well as “the kingdom ranked the third country worldwide in terms of providing humanitarian relief and development assistance, having provided over the past four decades about $ 139 billions in aid.” According to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace: “In only a few years’ time, Saudi Arabia’s soft strategy to combat extremism and terrorism [under the supervision of Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef] has generated some very promising results.” According to the Washington-based Saudi American Public Relation Affairs Committee, SAPRAC, Prince Muhammad Bin Nayef’s efficacious strategy in combatting terrorism made him a target for assassinations by terrorists. For more detailed efforts of Mohammad bin Nayef’s initiatives, one can read this report. These efforts were applauded by President Barack Obama who stated “I can say that, on a personal level, my work and the U.S. government’s work with Crown Prince bin Nayef, on counterterrorism issues has been absolutely critical not only to maintaining stability in the region but also protecting the American people”. Further illustrated by the comments of the former Director General of the CIA Leon Panetta: “Mohammed bin Nayef plays an indispensable role protecting the kingdom founded by his grandfather. As intelligence chief, he decimated al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia, penetrating plots, cracking down on funding and promoting deradicalization.”

The US, the UK, and Saudi Arabia are not perfect when it comes to many issues which still need improvement. I explained more in this article. Nevertheless, at least, they are taking concrete steps and donating millions of dollars to the fight against terrorism; For example, according to Muhammad bin Nayef and several other resources including the United Nations, “The Kingdom also provided resources to the United Nations’ counter terrorism center, including funds of over $ 100 million”.

This demonstration can be an inspiration to other countries to join in this fight as well. Instead of making accusations or placing blame, Iran would be better served by demonstrating what it has offered to the fight against terrorism, such as the amount it has donated, what programs it may have in place, and any other concrete approaches Iran may have initiated.

If there is to be any progress made to battle global terrorism, it has to be a multilateral and unified effort. The focus should be on the establishment of a new comprehensive, locally and internationally coordinated counter-terrorism strategy. Action is needed. Not after trivial vendettas have been settled, not after Iran has pointed a finger in every direction but at itself, but right this second. In my humble opinion, I believe the most comprehensive plan would be a one that concentrate on tacking the ideology of the terrorist groups, the poverty on global scale, the underdevelopments in many parts of the world, and application of affective social media. Alongside this multi-front strategy, “inter-faith and inter-cultural dialogue must guide efforts to eliminate incitement”. Every nation and government can contribute to this instructive plan to overcome global terrorism by achieving unification of all forces.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Costa Rican Dark Roast Whole Bean (12 oz)

The flavor of Costa Rica” A blend of the best beans from the Central and Western Valley growing regions of Costa Rica is what came to be known as our ‘Dark Roast’. The Central Valley’s sweeter and more acidic beans blend excellently with the Western Valley’s dense and full-bodied beans, resulting in a perfectly balanced cup. This blend is dark roasted to bring out its rich profile and noticeably chocolaty aroma. Holding the position of the darkest roast of all our coffees, we’re confident that we’ve managed to capture “the flavor of Costa Rica” in this blend.

Trump ‘The Dealmaker’ Could Address Clean Energy, Lindsey Graham Says

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump could embrace a clean energy policy as president, but only if he can be convinced that it’s a good business decision, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told The Huffington Post on Thursday.

“He’s the type of guy that, if you show him that’s the only pathway forward, he may have more sensitivity to the environmental side,” Graham said.

Graham has acknowledged the reality of climate change, which makes him something of an outlier among Republican lawmakers. Trump has called climate change a hoax perpetrated by China to hurt U.S. manufacturing.

Graham has been critical of Trump since they both were competing in the GOP presidential primary. In June, the South Carolina senator called on fellow Republicans to unendorse Trump after the billionaire estate mogul claimed that a judge presiding over a lawsuit against him was unfit to serve on the bench because of his Mexican heritage.

“If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this is probably it,” Graham told The New York Times then.

Trump’s skepticism on climate change has severely hurt the GOP presidential nominee with young voters, Graham said, since the vast majority of them firmly accept that human activity is causing significant shifts in Earth’s climate.

“Trump the dealmaker may emerge here if he gets to be president,” Graham said. “But when you’re campaigning for president, this is one reason he’s hurting with millennials. Millennials overwhelmingly believe that climate change is real, and when they hear a candidate say it’s a Chinese hoax, I think that is a barrier to growing the vote.”

On Thursday, however, Trump spoke to a gathering of fracking industry leaders, promising to lift environmental regulations and open more federal land to drilling ― probably not exactly what Graham had in mind.

Graham’s comments came moments after the senator spoke at a gathering of conservatives to discuss clean energy efforts. In his speech, Graham urged Republicans to join the ranks of climate change believers, and criticized the party’s lack of environmental awareness.

“Does anybody know what the environmental platform of the Republican Party is?” Graham asked. “Neither do I.”

6 Expert-Approved Tips For Dating With Anxiety

When you suffer from an anxiety disorder, getting through a date can seem near impossible.

It may help to know you’re not alone. An estimated 18 percent of all American adults suffer from an anxiety disorder of some kind, ranging from social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and general anxiety. There’s a good chance you’ve gone on a date with someone who’s had a panic attack over the thought of dinner and a movie.

There are ways to cope with anxiety, though, and meet someone worthwhile. Below, experts on anxiety share their best advice for managing your worries and stress so you can successfully get through a date.

One technique that is well-known in anxiety treatment is the idea of exposure: The more you deal with things that stress you out, the better equipped you are to handle them. If dating feels particularly nerve-racking, start slow by putting yourself in situations where you can practice small talk, said Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University.

“Go to any social event ― a dance, a church picnic or a hangout after work ― and set a goal of talking to a stranger who seems interesting for at least 10 minutes, without the pressure to ask anyone out,” he told The Huffington Post. “Taking the scary thing ― a real date ― off the table will give you security to practice your dating and conversational skills until you get more comfortable.”

Pay attention to the stories you’re telling yourself in anticipation of the date, said Jennifer Rollin, a psychotherapist in North Potomac, Maryland. Just because you think you’ll spend the whole night stuttering out of nervousness and mispronouncing menu items doesn’t mean that’s necessarily going to happen.

“When you view your thoughts as ‘just stories,’ you can distance yourself from the ones that are unhelpful,” she said. “Let’s say that you are thinking ‘I’m going to come across as insecure’ or ‘If people knew about my anxiety, no one would want to date me.’ Rather then judging yourself for having these thoughts, simply notice them and then determine whether that train of thought is helpful or unhelpful.”

When a thought is unproductive, filter it out and try to replace it with something more optimistic, Rollin recommended.

“For example, you might tell yourself, ‘No matter how this date goes, I am proud of myself for facing my anxiety and putting myself out there.’”

Try to see a healthy dose of stress as your friend when you’re dating, said Kimber Shelton, a psychologist based in Duncanville, Texas. A bit of nervous energy can give you the focus and motivation to get through the date. The key is to keep the date short so you don’t feel trapped.

“When stress is first activated we think, ‘I feel nervous, but I can do this!’ ― but that thought can be be temporary and short-lived,” she explained.

To that end, Shelton recommends scheduling dates of a reasonable length and meeting up in a familiar place ― your favorite coffee shop, for instance, or a nearby restaurant where you’re well versed in the menu.

“You want to just slightly push yourself out of your comfort zone,” she said.

Everyone dreads awkward silence on dates but when you have anxiety, you may feel a heightened need to “be on” around new people. You often feel tongue-tied, making even even basic conversation difficult.

To combat this kind of performance anxiety, Manhattan psychologist Chloe Carmichael recommends storing up a few conversation starters beforehand.

“Read some news stories before your date and choose a handful of topics that might come in handy ― something about the arts, the weather, sports, local news and world events,” she said. “Besides filling up the awkward silences, this will connect you to your date because current events are relevant to pretty much everyone.”

In anticipation of a date, it’s easy to get caught up in how the other person might perceive you. But instead of worrying about where you stand, psychologist Stacey Rosenfeld suggests flipping the script: How will they stack up in your estimation?

“Shift your focus to whether or not this is a suitable person for you to date, said Rosenfeld, who’s based in Coral Gables, Florida. “Focus on what you have in common, their chemistry with you and whether or not you’d like to see this person again.”

She added: “This can take a lot of the pressure off the meeting because you realize you have an active role in this process, rather than passively waiting to be accepted or not. This strategy works great for job interviews, too!”

When the date is over, put it to bed. You may feel tempted to mentally replay the awkward moments or lulls in conversations but resist that urge, said Shannon Kolakowski, a psychologist and author of Single, Shy, and Looking for Love: A Dating Guide for the Shy and Socially Anxious.

“Rather than beat yourself up or focus on awkward moments, go through the date recalling fun moments and good conversation,” she said. “Did you both find yourself laughing or did your date compliment you, or vice versa?

If the date truly lacked any moments of connection, remind yourself it wasn’t your fault, Kolakowski said: “Sometimes people just don’t click, and that’s OK.”

Exercise Can Help Control Feelings Of Hunger, Memory Hunger Pangs And Memory

Recent research has identified at least three different ways in which exercise can help our brains.

These include helping the brain control hunger; increasing the blood flow in important areas of the brain; and specifically helping memory functions.

Hunger

Two sets of hormones impact hunger … ghrelin, which sends information to the brain when energy is running low, and two kinds of peptides, within the brain, which signals whether or not the body needs food.

Dr. Amy Rothberg, an assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan, directs their Weight Management Clinic. Rothberg describes ghrelin as the “hunger hormone“–a hormone which is generated in response to internal signals that the body needs fuel. This physical feeling of hunger is referred to as homeostatic – that is, the body is working to maintain its internal stability.

Within the brain, there are hunger-stimulating (“orexigenic” or PYY) peptides, and hunger-suppressing (“anorexigenic” or GLP-1) peptides. These peptides are hormones that are responsible for telling the brain that a person needs to eat, or that a person’s need for food is satisfied.

The best way to satisfy homeostatic feelings of hunger is to eat, and Rothman points out that protein is the most filling of the macronutrients. And, another study, reported in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, concluded that what we would expect does, in fact, happen: eating larger amounts of protein produces more feelings of fullness than eating smaller amounts of protein.

But now that we have begun to understand how hormones generate feelings of hunger, there is a question as to whether there are ways besides eating, relating to these hormones, to suppress feelings of hunger.

Dr. David Stensel, at the U.K.’s Loughborough University, ran a study that concluded that an intense exercise workout can indeed lower the body’s levels of ghrelin, which then raises the level of peptide YY, the hunger-suppressing hormone … for a short while. And studies at the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts conducted by its director, Barry Braun, supports that conclusion. More research in this arena is needed to understand how exercise generates that effect, and then to develop a way of using that information to help suppress feelings of hunger.

Blood Flow in the Brain

There is a reduction in the size of certain areas of the brain that is linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

A study was undertaken to see whether exercise could have an impact on increasing the size of those areas. Kathleen Reiter, a member of the team that did the study, reported an increase of approximately eight and a half percent in the part of the brain that are responsible for language comprehension, awareness, and memory.

A study was undertaken to see whether exercise could have an impact on increasing the size of those areas. In an article on the notes that Kathleen Reiter, a member of the team that did the study, reported an increase of approximately eight and a half percent in the part of the brain that is responsible for language comprehension, awareness, and memory.

Helping Memory Functions

Another protein generated by our bodies, called cathepsin B, was shown in experiments on rodents, and then on monkeys, to cause the growth of new cells and connections in the hippocampus, an area of the brain that is of key importance to memory. Henriette van Praag, who investigates brain science at the National Institute on Aging, has now reported similar results in a small test of 33 people.

These studies tell us that, while we are still in the early stages of identifying exactly how exercise impacts the brain, further investigations may help us more fully identify how to use exercise to combat brain diseases and improve brain functioning.

Low Glycemic Food Recipes

Low Glycemic Food Recipes

The Glycemic Index Diet is an entirely new approach to weight loss, one that didn’t single out fat, carbs, or protein but, rather, emphasized the proper combination of these nutrients. Low GI foods, by virtue of their slow digestion and absorption, produce gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels. As these foods control your blood sugar levels, they regulate your hunger pangs and eating habits. Consumption of low GI foods also helps to prevent unnecessary snacking and excess calorie consumption. Lower-glycemic foods create a steadier rise in blood sugar and insulin levels. Because you’ve got balanced insulin levels, you burn (rather than store) fat and maintain steady energy and also you feel fuller for longer and are, therefore, not as likely to go searching for snacks every two hours, ultimately you end up losing weight effortlessly. Low G.I. Diet stress on eating more complex carbohydrates, and Eating less sugar, less processed foods, and fewer foods that convert to sugar in your body. Oats, oat bran and toasted sugar free muesli are great picks with a side of milk or fruit, Grilled meat or fish during dinner is another low GI alternative along with your veggies. Frozen low fat fruit desserts and nuts are the best source for high nutrition. Stick with a low-Carb diet, which reduces or eliminates sugar and processed foods. Eat lean protein, fruits and vegetables, good fat, nuts and seeds, and you’ll be eating a low-glycemic diet without worrying about the numbers.

Video Shows Middle School Students Chanting Racial Slur On Bus

A Maryland school district is disciplining a group of middle school students who were filmed chanting a racial slur on a school bus.

The video was originally posted on social media on Tuesday by parent Brandon Long, local outlet WUSA reported. Long’s original Facebook post is no longer public, but according to WUSA, it read: “So our daughter had to experience racism today on her school bus from Robert Frost Middle School in Montgomery County MD. They are singing 1,2,3,4 how many n***** are in my store. I am outraged and I refuse to let this slide. Please help me make this viral. Repost everywhere!”

Long did not immediately respond to requests for comment. His Facebook post was shared thousands of times, and he also tweeted an uncensored version of the footage:

Montgomery County Public Schools launched an investigation into the incident and found that the students “were reciting a popular Vine chant that addresses issues of racial profiling,” according to district spokesperson Derek Turner.

“Whatever the motivation may be, this is still inappropriate,” Turner added. “The students are being disciplined in accordance with the code of conduct.”

Turner also noted that the “chant was made from a diverse group of students that included African Americans, Latinos and Asian students.” According to the National Center for Education Statistics, Robert Frost Middle School is only 5 percent black, and majority white and Asian.

The district is now working to turn the incident into a “teachable moment.” School leaders plan to launch a discussion about race with students and parents in the coming days, Turner said.

Why Your Environment Is Working Against You—And How To Fix It

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Did you know that the way we dress, our facial expressions, our posture, and the tone of our voice make up 93 percent of what we communicate to others?  Research pioneered by Dr. Albert Mehrabian shows that what we communicate non-verbally can be highly impactful. We are hardwired to listen to our senses without conscious thought, and this ability helps protect us from danger and saves us time making endless decisions throughout the day.

If we are so influenced by our senses, what else is subconsciously triggering our everyday decisions?

Lately, I’ve been trying to pay more attention to “nudges” in the built environment around us. The built environment includes the size and shape of our roads, parks, and buildings: these all drive our behavior. Specifically, I’ve been in search of ways the built environment can affect decisions we make about our health. What we see, hear, smell, taste, and feel impacts our actions—and emerging research in urban planning, occupational health, and behavioral science validates this. Here are just a few of the many ways to leverage the built environment to improve health outcomes:

Nudges to encourage movement

Building location and access to public amenities can impact how much we move. For example, research shows that proximity to parks and other recreational facilities is consistently associated with higher levels of physical activity and healthier weight status among youth and adults. The same goes for proximity to public transit—there is a link between access to public transportation and physical activity since transit use typically involves walking to a bus or subway stop. In one study, train commuters walked an average of 30 percent more steps per day and were four times more likely to walk 10,000 steps per day than car commuters.

Several studies show that simply letting people know the health benefits of taking the stairs and showing their location (like putting a sign in the elevator lobby or using stair banners, like these) increases stair usage by 54 percent. Taking this a bit further, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a “StairWELL to Better Health”campaign in its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. They use music, art, an upgraded appearance, and motivational signage to nudge employees to use the stairs more often. (Check out their downloadable signs, and see “before” and “after” images of their stairwells.)

Nudges to encourage healthy eating habits

You may not have heard the term “choice architecture,” but you experience its impact every time you stand next to the candy display at a checkout counter. Choice architecture refers to the different ways in which choices can be presented to consumers and the impact of that presentation on consumer decision making.

For example, the number of choices presented, the manner in which attributes are described, and the presence of a “default” can all influence consumer choice. Many companies are using this strategy by reducing the number of unhealthy foods available in the workplace or by making them harder to find.  ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Brian Wansink, director of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab and author of Mindless Eating, suggests a number of ways our eating behavior is significantly impacted by the way food is presented to us. For example, in some of his studies, people were 44 percent less likely to snack in kitchens that were tidy versus kitchen environments that were messy.

Keeping the kitchen clean is more than just a sanitation issue—it can affect how much we eat. In another study, Wansink found that people tend to eat less on plates that are 9-10 inches in diameter. People piled up food on larger plates, but felt “deprived” and went for a second helping when eating on smaller plates (around 6 inches in diameter). His other studies show that people are likely to serve themselves 20 percent less food on plates with “contrasting colors” to the food they are eating, e.g., white pasta on a red or blue plate. White breads and pastas on white plates? That is a recipe for “carb-loading”!

Nudges to reduce stress and improve well-being

We have a strong desire to be in and among nature. It’s only natural: for most of human history we spent all our time outdoors. This preference, often referred to biophilia, was introduced and popularized by E.O. Wilson, known as the “father of biodiversity.” Wilson suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems.

In Biophilic Design: Theory, Science and Practice, authors Stephen R. Kellert, Judith Heerwagen, and Martin Mador describe the importance of nature for human productivity:

“Nature is rife with sensory richness and variety in patterns, textures, light, and colors. All organisms respond with genetically programmed reflexes to the diurnal and seasonal patterns of sunlight and climate.”

Interestingly, biophilia-based design can be manifested in many ways. The most obvious way is to incorporate real plants, water, and natural views into buildings. Another way is to create “natural analogues” or use materials and patterns that evoke nature, such as artwork, ornamentation, biomorphic forms, or the use of natural materials. A third way to use biophilia is through configuration of space, by organizing interior environments or man-made outdoor landscapes, using similar to natural environments elements. In its paper “The Economics of Biophilia,” environmental consulting firm Terrapin Bright Green suggests:

“Over the last quarter century, case studies have documented the advantage of biophilic experience, including improved stress recovery rates, lower blood pressure, improved cognitive functions, enhanced mental stamina and focus, decreased violence and criminal activity, elevated moods and increased learning rates.”

There are hundreds more nudges and design strategies such as these that urban planners, architects, product designers, business owners, and homeowners can use to shape the environment around us to improve health and well-being. In the words of Winston Churchill:

“We shape our buildings; thereafter, our buildings shape us.”

The key is to be aware of how our environment affects us and to use this knowledge for good.

Why We Need To Talk About High-Functioning Depression

2016-09-21-1474495720-9325524-depression.jpg

By Emily Laurence for Well+Good

To an outside observer, Amanda Leventhal, a college student at the University of Missouri, appears to have it all together. Perfect grades, a good group of friends, involvement in her campus choir group–she’s not someone many would characterize as “depressed.” And yet, she is. It wasn’t until Leventhal penned an essay on her secret struggle with anxiety and depression that her friends knew anything was even wrong.

Antidepressant ads and pop-culture portrayals of depression often paint the same picture: withdrawal from friends or favorite activities, trouble sleeping, and crying. While those are signs, the problem is that there are many faces of depression. It also looks like Kristen Bell. It looks like Olympic swimmer Allison Schmitt. It looks like your colleague who just got promoted or your friend who just got engaged. They are part of a growing contingent suffering from what’s been dubbed high-functioning depression. And because a stigma is still attached, many keep their sadness hidden and no one knows anything is wrong–sometimes until it’s too late.

RELATED: Why Lady Gaga Thinks It’s Important To Be Open About Mental Health Issues

High- vs. low-functioning
High-functioning depression is when someone seems to have it all together on the outside, but on the inside, they are severely sad. Carol Landau, PhD, a clinical professor of psychiatry and human behavior and medicine at Brown University, says she primarily sees this in women with a penchant for perfectionism–AKA the same people who are likely your colleagues and friends with enviable lives and a long list of personal achievements.

“People often say being ‘high-functioning’ is better than being ‘low-functioning,’ but that’s not really true because the most important thing is for a depressed person to get help–which a high-functioning person is limiting herself from,” Landau says.

2016-09-21-1474495929-9506715-womansilenced.jpg
(Photo: Pexels/Stock.tookapic.com)

A struggle hiding in plain sight
For Leventhal, the public essay of her private struggle was years in the making. “It was something I had been thinking about for a while,” she says. “I was up late one night, not sleeping, and decided to put into words everything I had been reflecting on over the years.” She says after her post went live, her friends told her they were shocked. Now, she feels more comfortable bringing up her depression in conversations–“I mention that I have an appointment with my therapist the same way I would a dentist appointment”–but says she still doesn’t bring the topic up a lot because she’s too worried it will bum people out.

Landau says this is typical for women. “We’re still striving to be caregivers, and part of that is not admitting we need help,” she says. “But it’s a huge problem. Depression is actually the leading cause of disability worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, which takes into account things like days lost from work, not being up to doing daily activities, and [possibly leading to] other illnesses like diabetes,” she says. “So the minute someone opens up to their friend about it, they’ll find out that their friend will say, ‘Me too,’ or, ‘My sister feels that way too,’ or, ‘So does my mom,’ or, ‘So does our other best friend.'”

RELATED: Is Technology Wrecking Our Mental Health?

Other ways to spot depression
Leventhal doesn’t identify with the mopey women in antidepressant ads. Her symptoms manifest themselves in other ways. “For me, it was irritability,” she explains. Landau says this is totally normal. “You might have a friend who is cranky all the time, or who people think of as a ‘bitch,’ but inwardly that person is really struggling. Other subtle signs to look for: ironic or morose jokes–if they are out of character–or often seeming out of it.

So how do you talk to a friend who you believe is masking her depression? Landau says to ask if she is okay, pointing out that she hasn’t been herself lately. Leventhal echoes that sentiment. “Just little things, like asking, ‘How are you doing?'” she says. “Just be there to listen and ask them what they need. Different people will need different things.” Landau says it’s best to be able to come armed with a suggestion, like a reputable therapist, or an app like Headspace, used for meditation. “There are so many different types of therapists, medications, apps, and other tools,” Landau says. “That’s why it’s tragic that so many people don’t seek help.”

Obama Gathers World Leaders To Pledge Billions In Refugee Aid

UNITED NATIONS ― President Barack Obama had more than words for desperate refugees during a Leaders’ Summit that he hosted at the United Nations on Tuesday.

He announced that more than 50 nations and organizations have agreed to provide a combined $ 4.5 billion in financial assistance to groups helping refugees find work and education. That includes $ 1 billion from the U.S.

“I called this summit because this crisis is one of the more urgent tests of our time, a test of collective action,” said Obama, speaking just hours after he delivered his final General Assembly speech as president.

The Leaders’ Summit followed the first U.N.-wide summit on refugees and migrants, held Monday.

Around the world, some 65 million people are displaced from their homes due to violence and persecution, more than at any time since World War II. Over 20 million of them are refugees, the vast majority of whom are now living in just 10 countries.

“It’s a test of our international system where all nations ought to share in the responsibility,” Obama said. “It’s a crisis of our shared security, not because refugees are our threat but because refugees are often fleeing war and terrorism. They are victims.”

Obama emphasized the need not to demonize refugees, implicitly hitting back against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s proposals to ban Muslim immigrants (including refugees) from entering the U.S. and to build a wall along the border with Mexico.

“If we were to turn refugees back, we would be reinforcing terrorist propaganda that nations like my own are somehow opposed to Islam. It’s an ugly lie that must be rejected,” the president said. “It’s a test of our common humanity, whether we give into suspicion and fear and build walls.”

The co-hosts for the Leaders’ Summit included the U.N. General Secretary, Canada, Ethiopia, Germany, Jordan, Mexico and Sweden. Several of those countries have been struggling under the burden of hosting refugees. Germany, for instance, took in 1 million in 2015 alone.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II, whose country has seen 2.5 million Syrian refugees pass through since 2011 and is currently hosting 1.5 million, stressed the need to work on a macro level in order to make progress on a micro level.

“We need to work as a team,” Abdullah said at the summit. “Jordan’s burden is skyrocketing.”

Jordan has already handed out 28,000 work permits to Syrians this year and expects to offer more.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven pledged to donate more funds and to increase refugee resettlement in his country. Sweden has already offered $ 625 million in humanitarian aid this year, he said.

“I promise you, we will all be better for it,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said of welcoming refugees.

In his remarks, Obama also referred to the White House call for the private sector to step up. In total, 51 companies ― including Accenture, Airbnb, Citigroup, Facebook, Goldman Sachs, Google and IKEA ― have pledged to invest, donate or raise $ 650 million to go toward refugee education and employment.

Although the United States has long considered itself a humanitarian leader, it has been slow to welcome the latest flood of displaced people.

In September 2015, Obama pledged to increase the total number of refugees allowed to resettle in the U.S. to 85,000 ― up from 70,000 in the last three fiscal years ― and to reserve 10,000 of these spots for Syrians. Secretary of State John Kerry announced last week that the administration plans to set a goal of welcoming up to 110,000 refugees in fiscal 2017.

These increases are welcomed by refugee advocates, but the numbers represent only a drop in the bucket compared to what many other smaller countries are grappling with.

And there are some who feel that the back-to-back U.N. summits are just plain late.

Amnesty International “called for a meeting of world leaders two years ago,” Sahil Shetty, secretary general of the human rights group, told The Huffington Post. “There are some credibility issues. We’ve got to be a bit more serious than this.”

Why We Care So Much About Brad And Angelina’s Divorce

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are divorcing. Seems strange how much energy and personal time we invest in complete strangers. And then when something like this happens it startles us and makes us feel sad. Sad for the end of an era when our idealization of what a life could be is writ large in the relationship of someone else. It’s also a cold, unwelcome reminder that life and dreams and other people are never quite what they seem to be. Even if they’ve been the stars of your fantasies for half a lifetime.

But what else is there to do once you’ve built a glass house for someone else’s marriage or life, except knock it down. It’s so human of us. To peer over the fence at another’s way of life out of voyeuristic curiosity, only to shake our heads and tisk our tongues in disapproval. It’s also so human of us to forget or choose to ignore this infallible truth – that all humans are human.

It’s a truth that is the impenetrable foundation for a more forgiving and compassionate life and world-view. But it’s so much more interesting to hold out hope for the secret gods among us. It tickles our sense of separateness between “us and them.” And confirms our belief that other’s lives are more fulfilling and interesting. We also proclaim with vicarious arrogance that we would do it differently and here’s how.

I’ve only just started to outgrow the inclination for celebrity worship that consumed my teens and twenties. But even still, it’s only graduated to a different, more sophisticated version of the same – this time it’s dead writers instead of reality stars and historic leaders instead of pop singers.

Maybe we’re genetically predisposed to admiration turned idol-worship. It’s been so human for so long, even Moses can attest. I guess what I’m getting at is at the core maybe a deeper (or deeply rooted) fallacy that “what is out there is greener than what’s in here.” It’s got to be! we cry. But maybe if we’d start to look at life with the truth that all humans are indeed human, there would be less hero worship and more appreciation for the preciousness in each of us. Maybe more would be done to help the less fortunate. Maybe more of ourselves we’d make.

Assisted Suicide Isn’t Viewed the Same in Every Country

In Belgium, someone legally ending their own life is an everyday occurrence.

In fact, it usually happens more than once a day.

That’s because the northern European nation has the most liberal euthanasia laws in the world.

Since 2002, competent adults and emancipated minors there have been able to end their lives simply by asking a doctor to inject them with a lethal drug.

The request must be in writing and it must meet two criteria. The person needs to be in “constant and unbearable” pain and the condition must be “incurable.” The pain can be physical or emotional.

In 2014, Belgium extended the practice. It approved a law that allows terminally ill children of any age to receive a lethal injection if their parents agree with the child’s wishes.

People appear to be taking advantage of the laws.

More than 1,800 people in Belgium died by legal lethal injection in 2013. That’s an average of about five a day.

So, it wasn’t a big surprise in Belgium when reports came out earlier this month that a wheelchair-bound athlete might end her life after the 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil.

However, the report created quite a stir in the United States and elsewhere. So much so that 37-year-old Marieke Vervoort held a news conference a few days later to announce she wasn’t planning on ending her life.

Not yet anyway.

Countries’ opinions differ

Brazil is among a host of nations across the world that don’t allow assisted suicide.

In the U.S., only four states allow people in certain circumstances to end their own lives.

Those states are Washington, Oregon, Vermont, and California, whose law took effect in June.

Montana does not have “death with dignity” statute, but a state Supreme Court decision in 2009 cleared the way for physician-assisted dying.

Peg Sandeen, the executive director of Death With Dignity, told Healthline that European countries and the U.S. don’t see end-of-life decisions the same way.

She said Europeans have a more pragmatic view of death while views in the U.S. tend to be more emotional.

“We have an extremely youth-focused culture,” said Sandeen. “Americans’ attitude toward dying is to think we never have to do it.”

Stan Goldberg, a cancer survivor and professor emeritus at San Francisco State University, agrees.

Goldberg, who was a Hospice volunteer for 13 years, told Healthline that Americans’ views on assisted suicide tend to get caught up in spiritual arguments.

He noted that in Taiwan and other Asian countries the opposition to assisted dying laws is more rooted in duty. Their societies believe that children are obligated to take care of their parents.

That includes extending their lives when they are old.

“Right to die laws are an expression of a country’s values,” said Goldberg.

The case for assisted dying

For Goldberg and Sandeen, the reason to support death with dignity laws is pretty simple.
They believe it’s a decision people should be allowed to make.

“Everybody has the right to decide when their life will end,” said Goldberg, whose latest book on cancer patients is due out this fall.

Sandeen added that the option should be available to people who are in severe emotional pain as well as physical pain.

She noted that allowing someone to continue living under those circumstances isn’t always a kind thing to do.

“Letting nature run its course in some cases is cruel,” she said.

Sandeen added that modern medicine has made great strides in prolonging people’s lives. Now it must provide a solution when a long life is not the best option.

“Medicine needs a remedy for something it has created,” she said.

For Vervoort, the remedy offered by Belgium’s right to die law is a welcome relief.

She suffers from a degenerative spinal condition and was given approval for assisted suicide in the country in 2008.

She hasn’t used that permission yet.

However, the athlete said at her Sunday news conference the approval does give her peace of mind, knowing she can end her life if her situation becomes too unbearable.

Vervoort told reporters she probably would have killed herself by now if she didn’t have the legal option in her back pocket.

“I think there will be fewer suicides when every country has the law of euthanasia. I hope everybody sees that this is not murder, but it makes people live longer,” she said.

“When the day comes — when I have more bad days than good days — I have my euthanasia papers,” she said. “But the time is not there yet.”

Family Of Bombing Suspect Had Sued For Anti-Muslim Discrimination

The family of the man suspected in weekend bombings in New York City and New Jersey had a history of clashes with police and had accused officers and neighbors in their New Jersey town of anti-Muslim discrimination.

Bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami’s family members hold a fraught history with police and neighbors in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where they live and operate a fast-food chicken restaurant, according to court records. Rahami was arrested nearby Monday after a shootout with police.

Rahami’s father, Mohammad, alleged in a 2011 discrimination lawsuit against the city of Elizabeth and its police that neighbors and officers conspired to “maliciously harass, intimidate and threaten” his family based on race, religion and national origin. The alleged discrimination stemmed from ongoing disputes over how late the family’s First American Fried Chicken restaurant was allowed to stay open.

“We had some code enforcement problems and some noise complaints when they opened” in 2002, Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage (D) said during a press conference following Rahami’s arrest Monday.

The mayor said that the city passed an ordinance in 2009 that forced restaurants to close at 10 p.m. Rahami’s brothers and father sued, and a court ruled in the city’s favor in 2012, Bollwage said.

The chicken restaurant ― well regarded by some customers for its “friendly service” and known for attracting noisy late-night crowds ― had been the subject of complaints from neighbors, according to court records.

A neighbor told the Rahamis that “you are Muslims” and “Muslims make too much trouble in this country.”
Mohammad Rahami’s 2011 anti-discrimination lawsuit

According to the federal discrimination suit, neighbor James Dean McDermott repeatedly complained to police about the restaurant. McDermott allegedly told the Rahamis that “you are Muslims” and “Muslims make too much trouble in this country.”

The lawsuit claims police validated McDermott’s complaints without question. Officers told the Rahamis “there’s too much crime around here” and “this area by your restaurant is a known place for criminal activity,” the lawsuit says.

The complaints from McDermott and other unnamed individuals continued, as did police citations against the Rahamis.

During a 2009 incident, Rahami’s brothers reportedly clashed with officers over recording them on cell phones as police tried to close down the restaurant. Rahami’s father was detained and released, while his brother was arrested and later pleaded guilty to obstruction.

Rahami eventually took over day-to-day operation of the restaurant, Ryan McCann, a regular customer at First American Fried Chicken, told The New York Times on Monday.

“He’s always there, he’s a very friendly guy,” Ryan McCann told a scrum of reporters Monday. McCann described the Rahami family as “just trying to fit in.”

Rahami would often talk about cars and give him free meals, McCann said. After Rahami’s most recent visits to Afghanistan, where he was born, McCann said he noticed a “change.” He described Rahami as “not angry, but more distant.”

Other regular customers expressed shock that Rahami was wanted in a terror attack.

Flee Jones, who co-wrote a song about the restaurant’s chicken, said the family was hospitable and would let him host rap battles at the eatery with his friends.

Rahami was arrested Monday, roughly 36 hours after an explosive device that police say he planted rocked the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea and injured 29 people. A second, undetonated pressure cooker explosive device was found blocks away.

FBI Assistant Director Bill Sweeney said Rahami was “directly linked” to another small bomb that detonated along the route of a 5K race in a New Jersey beach town Saturday morning.

Prosecutors said they expect to charge Rahami with five counts of attempted murder and two gun charges in connection with Monday’s shootout. Terrorism charges will likely follow once federal officials assemble a more detailed case.

How to Waste Your Entire Life: A Quick Guide To Pleasure

The easiest way to waste decades of your life is to mistake pleasure for fulfillment.

Pleasure lives in the realm of now. It’s made of feeling and emotion, which are both very important, but predictably unstable. It’s impossible to base a meaningful life solely on the pursuit of pleasure.

At the extreme end of pleasure: over-eating, over-sleeping, chronic masturbation and sex addiction, television, benders, cocaine and ice cream (the verdict is still out here). Push the button, get the stimulus. Constant stimulation to dull the pain, anxiety and existential uncertainty of being a human in society.

It feels good to feel good. So why not try to feel good all the time? Pass the mint chocolate chip, please.

Fulfillment is concerned with your highest vision for the future. It doesn’t equate pain or discomfort today with pain or discomfort tomorrow. It assumes that the best is always yet to come. Those looking for fulfillment out of life will do things that aren’t fun now, to reap massive rewards later.

In his book Autobiography of a Yogi, Indian spiritual guru Paramahansa Yogananda recalls a conversation between a sage and his student:

The student exclaimed, “Master, you are wonderful….You have renounced riches and comforts to seek God and teach us wisdom.”

To which the wise sage replied:

“You are reversing the case! I have left a few paltry rupees, a few petty pleasures, for a cosmic empire of endless bliss. How then have I denied myself anything? I know the joy of sharing the treasure. Is that a sacrifice? The shortsighted worldly folk are verily the real renunciates! They relinquish an unparalleled divine possession for a poor handful of earthly toys!”

This irony captures the essence of seeking pleasure over fulfillment.

The other way toward fulfillment: Training for a triathlon, starting a business, writing a book, recording an album. All of these things can bring pleasure in the short term. But more often than not, they do not. They are not fun. They are a constant struggle. They take years to master. They are never urgent and the easiest things to postpone.

(Especially if a new season of Walking Dead is on.)

But these are also the types of activities that, done day after day, lead to the highest quality of life and most pleasure long term. Not the acute, “OMG this is so fun” type of pleasure — but the more subtle, albeit equally exhilarating feeling of overarching satisfaction with one’s life.

These types of activities make you feel like you’re worth a damn. And that’s important. Because you are.

Pleasure versus fulfillment is the difference between spending your time and investing it. Or the difference between consuming and creating.

The time will pass anyway — but at the end of a lifetime, what will you have to show for it?
Some of us will have 100,000 hours of television, a leased Mercedes and a bunch of clothes we got sick of last year as evidence that we were here.

Others will have created a legacy that leaves the world a better place and makes a difference for people we’ve never even met.

Which one will you be?

3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships

There are so many things we can all do to improve our existing relationships, regardless of their nature. But if we only applied these 3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships, we would certainly make them more fulfilling for all parties involved.

2016-09-19-1474308214-435847-Couplewithbikes_iStock_70626075_LARGE.jpg

#1 Choose Loyalty
This of course means being there when it matters. But it also means standing up for the relationship by not getting involved in gossip talks with others, about our lover, friend, sibling or whoever that person may be. The loyalty we show when the person is there to see is powerful, but the one we display to others when that person is not there to witness, can make the relationship bullet proof.

#2 Choose To Give
Relationships are, in many instances, like joint bank accounts. The account holders can only withdraw what they’ve put in. And the more they put in, the more “compound interest” they can expect to reap! Contrary to common belief, our main responsibility in a relationship is to give. It’s always easy to question the other “joint account holder’s” behavior, but if we have the relationship at heart, we will seek to give first.

#3 Choose Truthfulness
There’s always a fork in the road in any relationships. One side of the fork seems to commonly offer a wider and smoother path, whereas the other often looks narrower and bumpier. This comes in the form of an event or a situation when we have to choose between the plain truth or… a “twisted” one. As hard as it is to say, we should always choose the truth. When we do, not only does it display that we stand for our word, it also echoes our loyalty and our willingness to continue to give to the relationship.

The endless choices we now have in all areas of life, affect our perceptions. Perceptions like the new “flavor of the month” or the novelty, ought to be better than the “old” one… Or the sense that everything is disposable, because after all, I can always get a new upgraded version of what I have… It brings also the notion of “change,” that we have to look for change at all costs, because if we don’t, we may become obsolete or “passé.”

When it comes to our relationships, we seriously think that we have to be very cautious about the subtle effects of the “endless choices society” we live in. We think it’s time for all of us to make basic choices that will empower the relationships we cherish. The kind of choices that are not new, on the contrary, they are rooted, old fashioned choices, that define who we are, where we come from, and more importantly can remind the other person in the relationship, what we intend to continue to build upon.

Family Sues After 7-Year-Old Gets Handcuffed At School For Crying

Kaylb Wiley Primm was in second grade in Kansas City when he started crying in class because he was being bullied. Within minutes, the child found himself in handcuffs. Two years later, his life is just getting back to normal.

The incident began when a school-based police officer happened to walk by Kaylb’s classroom and hear him crying and disrupting other students, according to a lawsuit filed last week by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of Kaylb’s family. When Kaylb continued to cry and yell in the hallway, against the officer’s requests, the officer put the child in handcuffs and brought him to the main office, where he sat until a parent arrived.

Kaylb’s life was upended as a result of the incident. His mom, Tomesha Primm, took him out of school out of fear for his safety. She said he started having nightmares and wetting the bed. Now the family has filed a lawsuit in hopes that the school district will better train its police officers to work with kids and provide compensatory damages.

“To put it simply, [Kaylb] was terrified. School is supposed to be a safe place for kids where they can go and learn to be themselves and learn more generally,” said Anthony Rothert, legal director of the Missouri ACLU. “It quite understandably made him feel unsafe and afraid to return.”

The lawsuit, which names Kansas City Public Schools as well as a school principal and police officer as defendants, is based in part on the police officer’s incident report. According to the police officer’s account, the child had been “out of control in his classroom and refused to follow my directions.” Still, the officer violated Kaylb’s right to be free from unreasonable seizures and excessive force, according to the lawsuit.

At the time, Kaylb was just 7 years old, less than 4 feet tall and less than 50 pounds. His mother often volunteered at the school. She was shocked to learn that handcuffs were used to calm her child.

“I couldn’t believe it because I couldn’t imagine they were allowed to do anything like that, or I would never have put him in there,” said Primm. “He knew he didn’t do anything wrong. He didn’t know if the man was going to take him to jail.”

Primm didn’t want her son to be in any further danger, so she withdrew him from school and taught him at home for two years ― even though it meant she “missed out on an income.” Though Kaylb prefers not to talk about the incident, Primm knows it weighs on him. He went back to a traditional school this year, although not the same one as before.

“He’s laid back, he’s like the easiest kid,” Primm said. “I think his maturity level is high versus kids his age … He opens the door for me all the time. He runs to get the door. He’s such a gentleman.”

The lawsuit contends that the police officer violated Missouri rules when he handcuffed Kaylb. Policy from the Missouri Department of Education says that kids should only be restrained in response to “emergency or crisis situations.”

A statement from the district says police officers are not beholden to department of education policies.

“Contrary to reports that KCPS security officers violated certain [Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education] regulations, all KCPS officers are commissioned by the Kansas City Police Department in accordance with state law. This important distinction alters the parameters of their capacity to act in certain situations,” says the statement, “Notwithstanding the expanded scope of their authority, the school system’s present administration is taking numerous steps to ensure that our security officers are focused on de-escalation, conflict resolution, trauma intervention and relationship building.”

Beyond that, the statement says the district cannot comment on lawsuit specifics, but “Kansas City Public Schools strives to maintain a safe, secure and equitable environment that is welcoming and nurturing.”

Rothert sees the incident as part of a larger pattern of unfair school discipline practices. Data shows that black students often receive harsher punishments than their white counterparts

“There needs to be a discussion about why black students are receiving discipline while white students who do the same thing do not receive discipline,” said Rothert.

Even though it hurts Primm and her son to rehash the incident, she is speaking out because she hopes what happened to her son won’t happen to another child.

“No schools should be handcuffing little kids. I want it to stop,” said Primm. “Someone needs to step up and speak up. Unfortunately, I’m not a media guru. This is, to a certain point, embarrassing. But if this is what it takes to help people recognize it’s not OK,” she added, she’d be willing to do it.

How We Unintentionally Harm Our Children (And Ourselves)

2016-09-15-1473952423-8177006-photo145003758677400cb81edd142.jpeg

Without intending to do harm, we damage our children. We don’t want to do it — we don’t know we’re doing it — but it’s happening.

To survive, our children “forsake their true selves.”

I haven’t stopped thinking about that sentence since I heard it.

Did my parents unintentionally do this to me?

Are you doing it to your children?

That sentence came from an interview I did on my podcast the Art of Authenticity with Dr. Shefali, a clinical psychologist who specializes in the blend of Eastern philosophy and Western psychology. On the show she explained how we disconnect from our authentic truth in childhood, how we may be parenting in a way that is disconnecting our children from their truth, and what she calls Conscious Parenting as a way to prevent it.

After talking with Dr. Shefali, I could not help but think about the moment that I disconnected from my authentic truth and how many people out there may have suffered the same fate.

My defining moment occurred in 8th grade. I was walking down the hallway, chatting with my friends, hoping that my outfit was on point with the latest 1980s style, when I entered into a conversation with a bunch of boys. I can’t remember the exact words that my good friend uttered about how uncool it is when a girl beats you in sports, but it was the moment I let go of my authentic voice.

In 1984, it wasn’t that cool to beat the boys, plus my parents weren’t exactly the sporty types. For me, sports weren’t something to do to get exercise or to make friends, they were part of my authentic truth. It was part of my identity. As soon as I could walk, I ran. I ran after anything that moved and soon I was playing football with my older brother’s friend, and winning. This wasn’t a hobby, it was part of who I was, who I am.

But it wasn’t popular and so I let go of myself for what I believed benefited others. I believed I would get their approvals, but that was an assumption on my part – a costly assumption.

The crazy part was that I continued to play varsity soccer and varsity tennis, but what mattered was that I no longer cared. To be “cool” and to align with my parent’s values, I took on the role that it didn’t matter – but it mattered.

It mattered a lot because I gave up on my connection to a sacred part of myself. I let go of my belief that I had a right to my authentic voice, my truth.

I lost myself. I fell in with the wrong crowd. I can only describe the sensation this way: my feet felt like they didn’t touch the ground. My authentic self slid into the background, out of mind’s eye, in exchange I got my parent’s, friend’s and culture’s approvals. Slowly, what replaced that authentic self was a shell – an idea of what my life ‘should be’, not what I wanted it to be.

And that was that. “I don’t care.” became the mantra of my life. My life decisions were outsourced to the “world”. The result was a life that never felt quite right and a sense of overwhelm that followed me everywhere.

Because here is the thing: When you don’t create a life that is entirely of your making you never feel quite right and life takes on this overwhelming feeling. It can manifest in many ways: small decisions become difficult to make; saying ‘no’ becomes difficult; even saying ‘yes’ becomes confusing and frustrating.

But the result is always the same. Resentments, anger, and anxiety take center stage in your life.

It wasn’t until 20 years later that I began to bring my truth to the forefront of my life’s choices. It hasn’t been easy. I re-read all of my favorite philosophy books on what an authentic life means and I applied the ancient concepts one by painstaking one to my life.

But now my feet touch the ground. I never let go of my truth. I hold on tight, even when it isn’t popular.

Do you remember a moment when you let go of a defining part of yourself to fit in, to get your parents approvals, to get the love you crave? Do you feel overwhelmed daily and have a sense that your life is just not quite right?

Clip from Podcast Art of Authenticity with Dr. Shefali

[00:00:16.3] LC: If that doesn’t happen and the parent is putting that ego self onto the child, I’ve heard you describe that the child sort of splits away, that they protect their deeper self?

[00:00:27.3] Dr. Shefali: Yeah, they have to survive, right? We all have to survive. So one of the ways of surviving. So the main ways that we forsake or abandon our true self or that poor true self didn’t even have a chance to fully develop because it was having to constantly fend off the projections of the environment and the more unconscious the parent is, the greater they put these projections, this heavy mantel, the second skin, the third skin on the child. So the child will never really develop their true skin.

It was such an honor to have Dr. Shefali on my podcast, The Art of Authenticity. The quote was a clip from our conversation on the show. I wanted to highlight it because I thought her words were so powerful, so meaningful that they have blown me away ever since we talked. My work focuses on how to shed the layers that weigh your authentic voice down and how to reconnect to your truth, the truth that is not broken, but only buried under the impostor voices from culture, family, and the challenges in life. And so when Dr. Shefali’s showed up on the podcast with an explanation of the origins of an inauthentic life, I was blown away.

Here’s why.

Without intending to do harm, parents project their own images so heavily onto their kids that the child never developed their true skin, their true selves. Why? To survive, the child has to give up on their true self to satisfy the parent and keep the love the child so deeply desires. The desire for approval, love, safety outweighed the child’s desire to remain true to themselves.

The outcome – we can’t decide on dinner, we can’t decide where to live, even what to do with our lives in a way that feels completely at peace within ourselves. Most of us wonder ‘what is wrong with us’. We wonder why we can’t feel at ease in our life choices – it’s because we haven’t developed a connection to that deeper self.

It’s simple in theory to speak your truth, yet many of us convince ourselves day-to-day that we should do things that are not aligned with our truth. Why? Dr. Shefali, clinical psychologist who’s been on Oprah and travels the country explaining these ideas, is sharing the answer with us. It’s because we never developed our authentic self; we never learned how to speak our truth. Our family’s projections were so strong that we got lost in those projections and we never got the opportunity to develop that deeper sense of self.

We split away from our truth and now we make decisions from our minds. Our minds are filled with pros and cons, how to get other’s people approvals, and all these incredible skills which can be helpful, even necessary in our lives.

But when we don’t have that connection to our deeper self, how do we figure out what it is that we want? How do we build a life that makes sense for us?

[00:03:04.3] Dr. Shefali: Yes but as parents, we have to seize the power we have in the moment and it’s in these ordinary little moments where we get to say, “Okay, what matters right now? Does it matter that my child feel rejected for an external validation of a grade or can I separate the external validation at this moment and let my child step into their own journey, their own body and their own relationship with their experience versus me putting it onto them?”

So it’s in those very subtle moments where we get to make choices and step back and say as parents, whatever your daughter or your son’s name is, Jake, Jack and this is of course after they’re seven years old or six years old so they can comprehend and you say to them, “Look, these are the things that go into getting this result. I can help you get these results. This is the effort that it’s going to take. These are the conditions that I will create in the home.

Such as, I will create a quiet place, I will be there to assist you, I will give you healthy nourishing food so you can get to that goal, I would drive you to that place that will help you get that goal or I will give you the tools and skills in that subject matter, whatever it is. But at the end of the day, you’re going to have to put in the effort and care enough to get that goal. I’m not invested in that goal because I think you’re perfect and whole and complete the way you are. If you want that goal, I am there to assist you.”

And always providing that assistance-ship and the space and the room for the kid to grow into it but not telling the kid inadvertently or unconsciously that, “I will approve of you, only if you create that external goal in your life.” I think parents sometimes forget how important it is to teach children that, “I see you, I care about you and you matter to me whether you get that A grade, the B grade, you’re a soccer star or you’re just in your room reading a book or doing nothing. I validate you and I honor you for who you are.”

Dr. Shefali continues to share such pearls of wisdom. This simple, simple, simple point, “I’m here to assist you in your life but I honor you and validate for who you are today. I see you, I care about you, you matter.” Unfortunately, most of us didn’t get that message as children. The message we received was: we’re only good enough for the grades we get, for the things we do, for the projection that we put forward into the world, but not who we are as a human being.

And when we aren’t valued for the person we are and we focus on the self that was created from the projections placed on us, we lose connection with who we are. We can’t see ourselves anymore so we rely on what other people have told us about ourselves and what makes us happy. Our life choices rely on what we believe to be the quote “smart choice in life”. The result: we resort to a life designed from our minds.

I see this every day.

So say you want to change jobs, so you come to me for coaching and you want to talk about how to make a change. As we begin our session, I ask, “what do you want.” Client after client doesn’t know how to answer that question. The connection to their truth has been lost.

Because they haven’t validated who they are, they haven’t felt as if that is enough, so they try to make sense of their life choices. They try to make smart decisions.

But you can’t make a choice for yourself when you don’t know yourself. If you haven’t had a chance to embody your truth, your voice, how can you make life choices to figure out how to change jobs or how to find the relationship of your dreams?

But you can, you can take steps to find that voice. You just need to learn how. Like a child who’s learning how to walk for the first time, you have to learn how to find your truth, step by step until your truth is your first instinct – the unconscious default, not the voice that’s buried deep beneath the mind’s chaotic and misleading views.

[00:07:03.7] Dr. Shefali: Okay, so first, the disconnect will show up in many external ways. First, life doesn’t go your way, your boss is upset with you and your spouse is not working cooperatively and your friend was rude to you. First, the cracks starts showing up in external ways and our instinct is to blame everyone, right? “My boss is mean. My friend was mean. My spouse is mean. My child is disobedient, and the weather is not being cooperative.”

So we blame the whole external realm for our inner discontent and so this is the first sign that we are internally disconnected. When our external world begins to show up with loud resulting, “I’m not helping you, I’m not supporting you. I’m not working well with you,” this is how the internal disconnect shows up. So usually at this point, people kind of break down and they go seek help and therapy and that’s a good thing and then the wise guy therapist, the parent, the friend kind of tells that person, “You know, these are indications. These are wake up calls for you to go, “Whoa, what inside me is disconnected and not aligned?”

Okay, so first you have to pay heed to the disconnect, right? Is my first message to you. So if you have a conflict after conflict with your child, they heed to that. That’s a sign that there is something disconnected within you and of course, it is easy to blame the kid and punish the kid and discipline the kid but then what? At the end of the day, the only person who has power to change is you. So you have to then start saying to yourself, “How can I start taking that pause in the moment and look in the mirror and not react?”

The first step is not to react and the step to not react means to take a pause. The way to take a pause is to invite yourself to say, “For the next three days, I’m just going to enter silent mode and just pay attention. So if my child is being rude to me, I’m not going to react and say, “Why are you being rude to me? I’m going to punish you. I’m going to discipline you,” I am just going to listen and say, “I hear you. I can see that you’re upset. I’m going to watch and see how I make you upset and I’m going to pay attention.”

Just the willingness to turn inward and say, “I am going to pay more attention even though I wanted to yell at you and scream at you and make you feel bad for making me feel bad. Instead, just not taking it personally for a moment and pay attention and begin to see how I’m contributing to your distress.” So instead of blaming the world, we begin to turn our eyes inward and begin to ask the pivotal question which is, “How am I contributing to this upheaval in my life?”

The key thing is first to gain the awareness that you are not coming from your true self. Then, take full responsibility for your behaviors. Once you have the awareness, and you take full responsibility you can begin to learn how to operate from your authentic self.

Interview after interview, book after book, I see the same theme. Nothing can start without awareness of what’s going on with you. Our first instinct, as Dr. Shefali is saying – and so many brilliant, wonderful people have said – is we stay focused on the world around us, not our deeper instincts. In part because we haven’t developed that deeper sense of self and in part because we think we won’t like that deeper sense of self.

So we focus on the external world. We blame. We get stuck on being a martyr and a victim. We are upset with what we believe other people may have done to us. But this is your work. It is your work to honor who you are. Maybe you weren’t seen as a child, maybe you weren’t told you mattered, but now it’s up to you. You must start the journey by turning inward and creating the awareness of what’s going on with you.

If you stay in the blame or victim space, you’ll never be free. You’ll never rise up and you’ll never have the empowered life that you desire. When you create the awareness and check in with what’s going on with you, you can then begin to grow. You can begin to learn about who you are and who you are not. And those disempowered voices of the mind that tell you, “You’re not enough, you are not capable enough, you’re not powerful enough, you’re not lovable enough,” for who you are, must be managed or they will be your undoing.

[00:11:22.4] Dr. Shefali: So we begin changing and liberating ourselves and that is ultimately the most powerful thing we could do.

[00:11:29.4] LC: Thank you so much for listening to this week’s episode. Thank you again, a big thank you for Dr. Shefali for coming on the show, doing this tremendous work and sharing these incredible ideas. They’ve changed my life and I know they can change your life too.

‘Envious’ May Just Be The Most Common Personality Type

Are you one of those jealous people constantly comparing your life to that of Kim Kardashian or your friend with the great vacation pictures on Facebook? Good news: you don’t need to envy about one-third of the population, because they’re wasting their time being envious, too.

A new study out of Spain, published Thursday in Science Advances, suggests that “envious” is the most common personality type. A computer algorithm classified people based on their behavior in hundreds of social dilemma scenarios and found the majority could be categorized into four basic personality types: optimistic, pessimistic, trustful and envious. Thirty percent of the people were rated as envious.

“These subjects seem to behave as driven by envy, status-seeking consideration, or lack of trust,” the researchers wrote in their paper. “These players prevent their counterparts from receiving more payoff than themselves even when, by doing so, they diminish their own potential payoff.”

Each of the other three personality types ― pessimistic, optimistic and trustful ― described about 20 percent of people. The last 10 percent behaved so erratically that the computer program failed to categorize them.

These types are very different from the dimensions of personality we more often hear about ― mainly the Big Five of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness. Those five try to describe aspects of an individual’s general psychology. The four new categories, in contrast, describe the types of behaviors that people show in a social context, where they have to interact with others.

The new study analyzed the responses of more than 500 volunteers to hundreds of hypothetical dilemmas in which people could either cooperate with their teammate or act in their own self-interest. In one scenario, for example, two people are going hunting. On their own they can catch rabbits. If they cooperate, they can take down a deer, which means a bigger prize for both. But if one opts for rabbits and the other for deer, the lone deer hunter is out of luck. And the players don’t know what their teammate is thinking.

So what would you do in that situation ― settle for rabbits, or take your chances and go for the deer?

This thought problem and others used in the study are variations of the well-known prisoner’s dilemma, in which the two players are facing jail time. They are told that if both of them remain silent, both will be freed due to lack of evidence. If only one of them confesses, essentially betraying the partner, the confessor will be freed but the other will go to jail. If both confess, both will go to jail but with a shorter sentence. And they can’t consult each other.

For each individual, the safer option, and hence the more rational choice, is to confess and end up either free or jailed with a shorter sentence. But many times people opt to cooperate with their partner in crime and keep silent, even though they have absolutely no guarantee that their partner will do the same.

The prisoner’s dilemma is often used to show that people are not always rational beings focused on their own interest. They may cooperate with each other because they have a sense of the greater good (in this case, the good of the team) or because they have faith in the kindness of others or simply because they are nice.

But as these new findings show, it’s not just rationality or cooperative spirit that determines what humans end up doing. Their own personalities, too, play a part.

In the deer vs. rabbit scenario, for example, envious people chose to hunt rabbits because they wanted to get a deal at least equal to their partner’s. The optimists chose to hunt deer, hoping for the best. The pessimists went for rabbits, demonstrating their extreme aversion to risk. The trustfuls chose hunting deer too, without hesitation. (The trustfuls differed from the optimists in that the former chose cooperation in every round of these dilemmas without actually caring about winning or losing. They were probably the wisest, really.)

“The results go against certain theories; the one which states that humans act purely rationally for example,” study co-author Yamir Moreno of the University of Zaragoza in Spain said in a press release.

The envious 30 percent failed to cooperate just because they couldn’t stand the thought of potentially being left with a lower payoff than their teammate received. “This points to the difficulty of making people understand when they face a nondilemmatic, win-win situation,” the researchers wrote.

Although the games in the study offer hypothetical scenarios, they resemble many real-life interactions. Imagine that you are partnered with a co-worker on a special project. To achieve spectacular results, you both need to work hard. But it’s not guaranteed that the two of you will be given equal credit for the success of the project. So you might choose to do just the minimum, which certainly prevents your partner from getting unearned praise, but also deprives you of the credit that could come with the best results.

This approach is apparently satisfying to the envious. Who may constitute almost one-third of society. How frightening.

Who Next To Wield The Sword Of POTUS?

2016-09-13-1473792850-949452-IMG_2679.PNG

Ah, the United States of America, land of plenty, where one can choose amongst a cornucopia of options to satisfy all nuances of desire and have those choices delivered to one’s doorstep. When it comes to electing our next president, however, we (with precious few exceptions over the years) choose from two options only. Do you prefer Good or Evil, Red or Blue, Donkey or Elephant? Don’t even think of asking for Chartreuse or a Horse, or – horrors – of thinking that there might be good and evil in all of us. What we have are two and two only – Two!, who have been anointed by virtue of having been shaped by the lapping, sculpting fires of the American electoral process.

This season, both of the mandatory two have baggage fit to burst and dozens of tired skeletons peeking from their respective closets, apprehensively wondering whether they will be fully reanimated in this, the peak of our electoral cycle. The Republican candidate, Hillary Clinton, and the National Enigma candidate, Donald Trump, also both share that necessary attribute of the power hungry – the ability to say anything at all (fiction, truth and all points in between) in their quest for the most powerful seat on earth, the Throne of POTUS.

One thing of which we can be reasonably certain, regardless of which of the two ascends the Throne, is that our beloved War Machine will trundle, myopically and belligerently, forward. Though much is made in these passionate times of partisan intransigence, when it comes to that perpetual motion war juggernaut, in constant bloom with jobs (translation: dollars!!!!!), there is nothing but bipartisan harmony, or rather, as Gore Vidal used to say, “one party with two right wings.”

Yes, with patriotic pride, nay, fervor! – let’s revisit the birth of the National Security State and merely some of the imperial highlights of POTUS administrations past, be they branded Democrat, Republican or National Enigmatic:

Harry S. Truman (D): The implementation of National Security Council Report 68 in April 1950 is ground zero for the permanent militarization of the US economy. Boys, we’ve figured out how to make the economy roar… let the Cold War begin! That the Soviet Union is a flimsy reed to spar against in this “war,” economically devastated, and 20 million people shy, from its efforts as our ally in the Good War, is a matter of little consequence. Arthur Vandenberg (R-MI), in support of the outlook articulated in NSC 68 tells HSD he’ll need to “scare the hell out of the American people,” and so he does. Better dead than RED! The Korean War (first in the Cold War (™) series of conflicts) begins two months later.

Dwight David Eisenhower (R): Korea grinds down, military “advisors” are committed to Vietnam. Coups are orchestrated by CIA in Iran and Guatemala; the democratically elected leaders of both countries had proven to not be malleable enough to US interests and thus are placed in the RED bucket. DDE is kind enough to let us know upon his descension from the Throne of POTUS that perhaps this “military-industrial complex” is not all it’s cracked up to be.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy (D): Picking up the baton from DDE, JFK escalates in Vietnam. Impolitely, Castro and his Cuban revolution refuse to be assassinated. Class is “in” at the School of the Americas.

Lyndon Baines Johnson (D):
Aware early in his tenure that Vietnam is “unwinnable,” (though certainly Vietnam is a win-win for RMK-BRJ, Monsanto, and Boeing), nonetheless, LBJ escalates further and “stays the course,” but then decides not to seek a second term, which is, of course, also unwinnable.

Richard Milhouse Nixon (R): RMN gives us Henry Kissinger, the imperial dunce that keeps on giving. Vietnam bleeds into Laos and Cambodia. Millions perish, tens of thousands of whom are American. In another hemisphere, outraged by the impetuousness of Chilean self-government, RMN shrieks “make the economy scream;” HK along with fellow war criminal Pinochet oblige and then some, treating Chile to the original 9/11.

Gerald Rudolph Ford (R): GRF doesn’t have much time to get ‘er done, but memorably – via HK – gives green light to Indonesia’s Suharto to put down the East Timorese, with the assurance of full US support, both immoral and materiel.

James Earl Carter (D): Graduates from the School of the Americas continue to excel in their post-graduate work. JEC also gives us the Carter Doctrine, which plops a huge imperial foot smack dab into the depths of the Persian Gulf. JEC’s National Security Advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, and his lovable pals in and around “Team B” (Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, et. al.) fashion a strategy for baiting the Soviet Union into Afghanistan, midwifing militant Islam into existence in the process – first iteration, the “Mujahideen.” You know what? It worked!!

Ronald Wilson Reagan (R):
American glory is restored post-Vietnam, as 135 square mile island Grenada is bravely spanked. Blessing the Mujahideen as “freedom fighters,” RWR also spots sinister RED plots south of the border and fixes to cut them off at the pass, bankrolling any force that commits to placing US interests before their own – John Wayne had nothing on RWR. School of the Americas grads continue to shine!

George Herbert Walker Bush (R): A thousand points of light turn out to be thousands of bombs at night when GHWB unleashes the war machine on unwitting, unsuspecting Panama and then on previously obedient stooge Saddam Hussein’s Iraq – the first made for TV military action that incorporates all of the lessons learned from the “failure” of Vietnam. Uncooperatively, the Soviet Union disappears. Another Force of Evil must be discovered quickly!

William Jefferson Clinton (D): GHWB’s Operation Desert Storm is extended by WJC via intermittent bombing and sanctions throughout the 1990s, leading to the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children. Clinton’s ambassador to the UN, Madeleine Albright (advisor to one of the Two in 2016, guess which one!) finds this to be a price worth paying. Lonely, lone superpower rebrands its efforts as “humanitarian” in the Bosnian War.

George Walker Bush (R): GWOT?! We have found a new Force of Evil! Maybe we’ll call it “radical” or “militant” Islam. Welcome back, Dick, Don, Paul – the whole gang! With as little thought as possible after 9/11, the bombing of Afghanistan commences – War Machine fully, fully functional, sir! Then, Iraq, having been softened up for an entire decade since GWB’s pop had drawn his line in the sand… Did you say soft? Let the bombs rain down!!

Barack Hussein Obama (D): Inheriting GWB’s wars, Nobel Prize (™) winner BHO finds a way to draw down the ostensible size of US involvement in those conflicts (even magnanimously withdrawing from Iraq for a couple of years), but somehow – magically! – US military action expands, now in 135 countries!, including, of course, those old chestnuts, Afghanistan and Iraq. BHO also finds a way to make this all fun – Terror Tuesday meetings at the White House where he gets to personally pick the next unlucky souls to be extrajudicially assassinated – by remote control, no less!

Which of the Two will be the next to wield the Sword of POTUS?

Hillary Rodham Clinton has the support of prominent neo-conservatives and various other historically Republican figures, not to mention some quantity of the 50 former GOP national security officials that will not be supporting her opponent. In sum, HRC will be more bellicose than BHO, if not GWB; per economist Jeffrey Sachs, she is in fact the standard bearer of the War Machine.

Donald John Trump, on the other hand, increasingly looks like someone who has applied for a job without reading the job description. The absurdities of the DJT campaign reveal themselves to us on a daily basis and are wonderfully entertaining (as his TV ratings attest), yet there appear to be few positions that he is actually qualified for, other than Orange Lout. If you imagine, however, that a DJT administration would be less warlike than the above, think again. And again.

Advantage HRC!

That the identity of the next person to wield the Sword of POTUS will be of little consequence to the prospects of our sanctified “defense” industry (Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, et al) is as close to a certainty as there is in this tremulously uncertain world.

Don’t Choke: How To Conquer Paralysis By Analysis

It’s one thing to achieve mastery. It is quite another to be able to perform under pressure. Psychologist Sian Beilock, author of Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting it Right When You Have To, defines choking as suboptimal performance, not just poor performance.

It’s a performance that is inferior to what you can do and have done in the past and occurs when you feel pressure to get everything right.

The most painful part about choking is that you know you can and have done better.

Choking can occur regardless of the number of hours spent practicing. Examples in sports abound. Golfer Greg Norman painfully choked at the 1996 US Masters. Entering the final round he had a six-stroke lead over Nick Faldo and then blew it. Snow boarding champion Shaun White famously missed winning gold at the 2014 Olympic winter games.

Why does the brain sabotage performance just when it matters most? Beilock believes that overthinking the situation is the problem. She calls it paralysis by analysis. Paralysis by analysis occurs when we try too hard to control every little thing. This over-attention to detail interferes with the fluidity and flow of well-rehearsed skills and ultimately undermines the ability to do something that would normally be relatively easy.

You don’t need to be a star athlete to experience choking. It can happen to any of us at key moments. A student who fails even though she was prepared for a test, an entrepreneur who freezes while presenting to potential investors, a well-qualified applicant who blows a key interview.

Try the following tricks to help you stay at the top of your game:

1. Say Om

Meditating before the big event calms the mind, reduces anxiety and increases cognitive horsepower.

2. Practice Under Pressure

Train under conditions that simulate the stress of the actual event. This will mentally prepare you for the real deal

3. Have a “Go-To Mantra

For golfers, a simple thought like “Smooth” or “Nice and Easy” just before hitting the ball can do the trick.

4. Whistle While you Work

According to Beilock:

If the tasks are automatic and you have done them a thousand times in the past, a mild distraction such as whistling can help them run off more smoothly under pressure.

5. Put Pen to Paper

Taking a few minutes to write down your worries before a test or presentation will help you stay focused on the topic and reduce forgetfulness due to stress.

Don’t let your brain sabotage your success.

Diet-Heart And New Markers For Atherosclerosis

It has become fashionable in the last decade to question the diet-heart hypothesis that has been building for over 100 years and is based on hundreds of carefully performed controlled experiments in humans and animals. This hypothesis links dietary choices, mainly saturated fat intake, to elevated blood cholesterol and the formation of atherosclerotic vascular lesions and clinical disease. The concept that data was fudged or that the public was mislead is an erroneous mantra repeat over and over by bloggers. Recently, a massive review of leading authorities in cardiovascular prevention presented data on the efficacy and safety of statin cholesterol lowering medications further reinforcing that a lower cholesterol is in general better, whether by diet or pharmacology. I am doubtful however that this will quite the vocal skeptics continuing to promote diets high in saturated fat and their impact on blood cholesterol levels from quieting down.

Lost in the discussion of diet-heart was that it was never was proposed that dietary fats and serum cholesterol alone were the only causative factors in heart disease. Other factors such as smoking, exercise, glucose control, and blood pressure were always considered important risks for the development of atherosclerosis along with diet. As science progresses, new factors that promote atherosclerosis are being identified that, along with diet-heart, appear to play a role in the development of clinical vascular disease. We learned of two of these in recent clinical trials.

Determining the presence and quantity of coronary artery calcification (CAC) by CT imaging is a method that can be used to identify silent atherosclerosis. Researchers studied two biomarkers to see if they predicted CAC in asymptomatic patients with familial hypercholesterolemia. One marker was lipoprotein a or Lp(a), an inheritable form of cholesterol elevated in the blood of approximately 20% of individuals and the other was PCKS9, a protein the prevents receptors on the surfaces of cells to clear LDL cholesterol particle from the blood. In 161 patients with familial hypercholesterolemia treated with statins, PCSK9 levels were higher in subjects with CAC than in those without CAC. Similarly, Lp(a) levels were elevated more commonly in those with the highest CAC scores. In a multivariate analysis, the main predictors of a positive CAC score was age, gender and then levels of PCSK9 and Lp(a). Baseline serum cholesterol were not reported and the low levels achieved on statin therapy were not predictive of CAC.

In the second study, 2,611 participants had a CAC score determined and the results were related to Lp(a) levels. Levels of Lp(a) were related to baseline CAC scores. In follow up scans at 4 years, 24% of subjects showed progression from a CAC of zero to a higher score. The participants with progression had higher levels of Lp(a) than those that did not have progression. Subjects with the highest Lp(a) levels had the highest rates of progression.

The process of atherosclerosis is complex and includes multiple genetic and environmental influences. For over a century the role of cholesterol in plaque formation and the link between dietary fats with vascular obstruction has been studied. These two new studies indicate that in addition to determining serum cholesterol fractions, newly appreciated biomarkers may play a role in the development of atherosclerosis. As there are new therapies of both elevated Lp(a) and PCSK9 (e.g. PCSK9 inhibitors), the routine determination of the levels of these biomarkers deserves further consideration.

Blood Type Diet [Second Edition]

Blood Type Diet [Second Edition]

Blood Type Diet [Second Edition] Featuring Blood Type Recipes – Now [Second Edition], with the following changes: * New introduction * New recipes * Improved formatting and editing – A blood type diet is one in which you aim to eat the right foods for your type of blood. Four different blood types determine the blood type diet food list. The blood types diet covers type O, A, and AB. The thought is that blood types and diet plays a major role in the health of the person. Each blood type has specific foods that are allowed and not allowed for consumption. Peter D’Adamo who pioneered the diet plan bases the diet plan very much on the book and research. He fully believes that blood type and diet are directly related and we should consume foods or diets for blood types to match each person. This book has an information section explaining all about the blood type diets, the theory behind the thought and goes over the foods list. The largest part of the book covers actual recipes for each blood type, type O, type A, and type AB. Each recipe section contains appetizers, desserts, breads, main dishes, and side dishes. Many of the recipes can be interchanged with some or all of the other blood types. Paying attention to the allowable and not allowable foods list helps to determine which recipes can go best with each blood type. The recipes in this book cover specifically for each blood type for quick and easy reference. Here are a sampling of the recipes for type O blood: Cheese Ball with Herbs, Sugar Cookies, Rye Bread, and Meat Loaf. Type A blood: Sardine Salad Spread, Fudge Cookies, Buttermilk Biscuits, Italian Chicken Breasts and Rice Stuffing. Type B blood: Meatballs A La Turkey, CranNut Cake, Fried Chicken Steak, and Green Beets. Type AB blood: Veggies and Goat Cheese Dip, Risotto Tomato Rice, Chicken Curry, Nutty Baked Yellow Delicious Apples, and Zucchini Bread.

The Senate Is Still Struggling To Reach A Deal On Zika Funding

WASHINGTON ― With just over two weeks to go until lawmakers leave for the campaign trail, the Senate has yet to reach a deal on coming up with funding for the Zika crisis or legislation to keep the government open.

There are ongoing discussions with the administration to put together a bill that would fund the government until Dec. 9, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told reporters Tuesday. A $ 1.1 billion measure to address Zika, which causes microcephaly and other birth defects, is expected to be included.

“Nothing has been closed out yet,” McConnell said of negotiations. “I think we’re making good progress toward resolving all of the moving parts and ultimately we’ll move a [continuing resolution] that addresses Zika and other matters.”

McConnell and other congressional leaders met with President Barack Obama on Monday to discuss a continuing resolution to fund the government and Zika programs. Health officials say they have exhausted all funding to fight the virus.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he is cautiously optimistic that the Senate will be able to come to an agreement, but blamed Republicans for taking their time on proposing language.

“At this stage in negotiations everyone should understand we’ve only had talks,” Reid told reporters on Tuesday. “Discussions have gone on for a week; we don’t have an offer in writing.”

Reid said Democrats thought “there was some light” late last week, until they learned a provision restricting funding for contraception providers would still be in the mix. That rider is a no-go for Democrats, who argue it targets Planned Parenthood.

“I thought we had something last Friday,” Reid said. “What stood in the way? The old famous Planned Parenthood.”

Democrats have no way of knowing what else could be included in the continuing resolution until they see the Republicans’ bill, Reid said.

I’m A Failure!

During my career in Academia, I have noticed an unhealthy trend among students. It’s not drinking or the latest designer drug, but it can be more harmful than both. The trend is the obsessively self-critical thinking that happens when students do something that doesn’t go “right”. They fall into the judgmental trap of thinking they are a failure or something is wrong with them.

We, as a society, are taught from an early age that being hard on ourselves is the only way to make things better… or make us better. We are taught that being self-critical is the driving factor for success.

There is a side effect to this kind of thinking. As students find out that they are not the best in class, or that the projects they created don’t receive the applause they think they deserve, many immediately turn to an obsessive, self-critical way of thinking. They bash themselves and judge themselves negatively. As a result, students become more stressed out, feel insecure, become depressed, and question their own self-worth. If not addressed early on, this kind of thinking can make the college experience a miserable time for any student.

There is a way to fix this kind of thinking, but few talk about it. One of the greatest keys to being successful in life and eliminating obsessive self-criticism is having Mindful Self-Compassion. Yep, that’s right. Compassion for your “self.”

Wait, what? Self-compassion? I know, it sounds somewhat odd to say out loud, but rarely do we consider showing ourselves kindness. We often show friends more caring and compassion than we show ourself. We’ve been trained to be self-critical and self-judgmental. Self-compassion goes against the natural order… or so many think. Some even think that if we are self-compassionate, we are being lazy and complacent.

But research has found that self-criticism only sabotages us and produces a variety of negative consequences. According to Kristin Neff, Ph.D., Associate Professor in human development at the University of Texas at Austin, self-criticism can lead to lowered self-esteem, anxiety and depression. Mindful self-compassion, on the other hand, can lead to greater understanding and peace of mind… and yes, personal and professional success.

So what is “Mindful Self-Compassion”? Actually, it’s quite simple. It can be broken down into three parts.

1. Mindfulness: Mindfulness is about slowing your mind down to become aware of what you are thinking or doing in the present moment. It involves turning off your autopilot response and noticing what is going on, meaning that you pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without attaching any judgment to them.

Being mindful creates a distance between your thoughts or experiences and your reaction to them. It’s almost like observing your thoughts in the third person. You become aware of your thoughts and just notice what’s going on… you don’t sweep them under the rug and you don’t need to obsess about them either. You become aware, make a nonjudgmental note about the thought, (i.e. “There’s Mr. Negative again”.), tell yourself you’re okay, let the thought go, and return to the present moment.

Being mindful of self-critical thoughts will help you to be more objective about any emotions that may try to hitch a ride.

2. Self-kindness: Accept that it is okay to be kind, gentle and understanding with yourself when you’re suffering.

It’s easy to be loving and kind to our friends. It’s time you do the same for yourself. If you mess up on a test, don’t beat yourself up. Think about why you did badly, then plan on studying more next time or find a tutor. People don’t think your project or assignment is the best? So what. You are learning, and making mistakes is part of that process. Take the criticism as tips on how to do better next time. Accept that you aren’t going to be perfect… no one is. Frankly, I don’t know anyone who is “perfect”… and those who think they are fall into the “ego-maniac” category. That’s not where you want to be.

3. Common humanity: Recognize that you are not alone in the self-criticism struggle. We are all struggling. We often think we’re the only ones to make mistakes, feel rejected or fail. Guess what? We all have these experiences; it’s part of being human. We tend not to discuss our struggles, but if you share your experience with others, I bet you’ll find that they have felt the same way at some point. You are not alone. Talking about it may help to negate the power of negative self-talk and criticism.

I know… it’s easier said than done. When you are stuck in a self-criticism rut, try the following mindful self-compassion exercise:

▪ Sit somewhere quiet and pay attention to your breath going in and out of your nose or mouth. Notice how your breath feels as it enters and exits. Stay focused on this for a couple of minutes and then repeat to yourself, “May I be kind to myself, may I know that I am a good person, may I be at peace, may I know that all is well.” Do this for two or more minutes when you feel the negative thoughts creeping in.

This exercise will slow down your thoughts, help train your mind to let go of negative self-talk, and accept that you are okay. For more exercises on gaining mindful self-compassion for yourself, check out the meditations here:

A couple notes for the nay-sayers:

1. Self-compassion is not self-pitying.
Self-pity is being obsessed and immersed in your own problems and forgetting that others struggle, too. Self-compassion is much different. Being self-compassionate is seeing things as they are –while not giving critical self-talk power. Self-compassion focuses on alleviating suffering while self-pity leaves you rolling in self-loathing.

2. Self-criticism is not an effective motivator.
Challenging yourself, recognizing weaknesses and growing from them are productive. However, there’s actually nothing productive or motivating about criticizing yourself. When you criticize yourself you are creating fear of failure and you may wind up losing faith in yourself. Even if you do achieve great things, you’re often miserable because you live in a world of self-loathing and criticism. That doesn’t sound like a very happy world.

I wish you the best. Be kind to yourself!

Why 5,000 People Are Suing Over Plavix

Legal action is apparently moving forward involving lawsuits filed by thousands of people who say they suffered serious injuries by taking the once-heralded blood-thinning drug Plavix.

The California Supreme Court ruled late last month that eight product liability lawsuits against Plavix manufacturer Bristol-Myers Squibb and Plavix distributor McKesson Corporation can proceed in San Francisco Superior Court.

Those eight cases involved 678 plaintiffs. They may soon be joined by a multitude of other cases, involving about 5,000 plaintiffs, that have been filed around the country.

There is no word yet on whether Bristol-Myers Squibb or McKesson will appeal the California high court’s decision.

Officials at both companies did not respond to Healthline requests for an interview for this story.

The case against Plavix

Plavix, also known by its scientific name clopidogrel, was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997.

The drug is a blood thinner used to reduce the risk of blood clots. It is prescribed to people who have a higher risk of cardiovascular problems, such as heart attacks or strokes.

In the past, Bristol-Myers Squibb touted Plavix as being more effective than aspirin in preventing clots and reducing the risk of heart attacks.

The medication was a profitable one for more than a decade, reaching sales of $ 7 billion in the United States in 2011. At that juncture, it was the top selling drug in the country.

Sales dropped dramatically in 2012 after Plavix’s patent expired, and the FDA approved generic versions of the drug.

During its profitable history, Plavix has caused a host of health problems for thousands of people, said Hunter Shkolnik, an attorney whose law firm represents about 2,000 plaintiffs in this dispute.

He said some plaintiffs, especially older adults, suffered gastrointestinal bleeding.

Others suffered severe bleeding after receiving ordinary cuts and scrapes.

Some plaintiffs say they suffered brain injuries after bumping their heads and suffering unusually heavy internal bleeding.

In some of these cases, the patients died. In the California cases, 18 involve families of patients who died.

In addition, Shkolnik said, Plavix was ineffective in about 25 percent of the plaintiffs. In others, it was no more effective than aspirin.

“For the vast majority there was no reason to take this drug,” Shkolnik told Healthline.

The plaintiffs have listed more than a dozen accusations against Bristol-Myers and McKesson.

Among the charges are negligence, false or misleading advertising, and wrongful death.

Shkolnik said Bristol-Myers Squibb was aware of some of the potential health risks associated with Plavix when the FDA approved the drug, but the drug manufacturer concealed this information.

He said the company then was “overly aggressive in marketing the drug” to consumers and physicians.

“They overstated the efficacy of the drug and understated its risks,” Shkolnik said.

Long history of Plavix

The current lawsuits are not the first time Plavix’s effectiveness and safety have been questioned.

In 2005, The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that concluded Plavix users had a higher rate of ulcers than people who took aspirin combined with a heartburn pill.

The following year, the journal published another study that stated Plavix combined with aspirin had no significant benefits over aspirin alone as a treatment for people at risk of atherosclerotic events.

In 2009, the FDA published an advisory saying Plavix may have reduced effectiveness in patients who don’t metabolize the drug well.

In 2010, the FDA issued a “black box” warning for Plavix on its reduced effectiveness for certain patients.

In 2014, state officials in Hawaii filed a lawsuit against Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi, saying the companies failed to disclose that Plavix has little effect on 30 percent of the population there and increases the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

In June, a whistle-blower lawsuit was reinstated by a New Jersey federal judge. In the suit, a sales representative says she was instructed to promote Plavix as superior to aspirin in preventing blood clots in stroke patients.

In the California court case, Bristol-Myers officials said the case should not be adjudicated in California because their company is not based there. It’s incorporated in Delaware, headquartered in New York, and has substantial operations in New Jersey.

Company representatives added only 86 of the lawsuits’ 678 plaintiffs reside in California.

However, in a 4-to-3 decision, the justices noted that Bristol-Myers Squibb has five research facilities as well as sales offices in California.

They also said the company sold 187 million Plavix pills in California between 2006 and 2012. Sales of those pills were estimated at almost $ 918 million.

The court also noted that co-defendant McKesson is headquartered in San Francisco.
