After Brexit, French Politicians Want English Language Out Of EU Too

Is the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union going to deal a fatal blow to the language of Shakespeare on the continent? English, one of the 24 official languages of the EU, is very much spoken in Brussels and in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. But according to certain leading French politicians, its status after Brexit should be questioned.

On Friday morning, the mayor of the southern French town of Béziers, Robert Ménard — a man with close ties to the National Front — reckoned that English no longer had “any legitimacy” in Brussels.

Left-wing presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who supports moving away from European treaties, has, for his part, said that English can no longer be “the third working language” of the European Parliament.

In various ways, they’re both wrong. The very complex operation of multilingualism in European institutions doesn’t rely on the single criterion of a member state’s membership in — or withdrawal from — the EU.

The EU’s official languages are communicative languages recognized by the institutions. At the inception of the European structure, during the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951, there were four: French, German, Italian and Dutch. Today there are 24 of these official languages, including Bulgarian, Danish, Croatian and, obviously, English. In the European Parliament, all documents and discussions must be translated simultaneously into the 24 languages.

The official language of a member state doesn’t automatically become an official language of the EU (as is notably the case with Luxembourgish). This recognition happens at the request of the state. If a state withdraws, its language might also be withdrawn, even if a case for it was never made.

Nevertheless, Great Britain’s exit should not be enough to abolish the use of English in Brussels, contrary to what Robert Ménard thinks. That is quite simply because the English language is one of the official languages of Ireland and Malta, who are still members of the EU.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s proposal is subtler because the European MP is targeting English not in its capacity as an official language, but as a working language. To enable the fluidity of exchanges within the EU, certain discussions led by certain institutions happen in a limited number of languages. Contrary to what the presidential candidate asserts, this isn’t the case during sessions of the European Parliament (except for press conferences). The European Commission, however, does have three official working languages: French, German and English.

This linguistic choice is clearly tied to member states’ influence, but it also follows practical concerns and historical traditions. Deliberation in the European Union Court of Justice takes place in French, as do the majority of discussions do in the European Court of Auditors.

So although the U.K. doesn’t use the euro and has preserved its monetary sovereignty, the European Central Bank has, since its creation, always and exclusively used the English language. And this is not for London’s sake, but for the sake of not complicating its extremely sensitive communication by multiplying the channels of translation.

8 Ways Smart People Use Failure to Their Advantage

2016-06-10-1465584721-7878179-8WaysSmartPeopleUseFailuretoTheirAdvantageHP

One of the biggest roadblocks to success is the fear of failure. Fear of failure is worse than failure itself because it condemns you to a life of unrealized potential.

“Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” -Winston Churchill

This sounds rather easy and intuitive, but it’s very hard to do when the consequences of failure are severe.

The people who make history–true innovators–take things a step further and see failure as a mere stepping stone to success. Thomas Edison is a great example. It took him 1,000 tries to develop a light bulb that actually worked. When someone asked him how it felt to fail 1,000 times, he said, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

That attitude is what separates the successes from the failures. Thomas Edison isn’t the only one. J. K. Rowling’s manuscript for Harry Potter was only accepted after twelve publishers denied it, and even then she was only paid a nominal advance. Oprah Winfrey lost her job as a Baltimore news anchor for becoming too emotionally involved in her stories, a quality that became her trademark. Henry Ford lost his financial backers twice before he was able to produce a workable prototype of an automobile. The list goes on and on.

“If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” -Henry Ford

So, what separates the people who let their failures derail them from those who use failure to their advantage? Some of it comes down to what you do, and the rest comes down to what you think.

The actions you take in the face of failure are critical to your ability to recover from it, and they have huge implications for how others view you and your mistakes. There are five actions you must take when you fail that will enable you to succeed in the future and allow others to see you positively in spite of your failure.

1. Break the bad news yourself. If you’ve made a mistake, don’t cross your fingers and hope that no one will notice, because someone is going to–it’s inevitable. When someone else points out your failure, that one failure turns into two. If you stay quiet, people are going to wonder why you didn’t say something, and they’re likely to attribute this to either cowardice or ignorance.

2. Offer an explanation, but don’t make excuses. Owning your mistakes can actually enhance your image. It shows confidence, accountability, and integrity. Just be sure to stick to the facts. “We lost the account because I missed the deadline” is a reason. “We lost the account because my dog was sick all weekend and that made me miss the deadline” is an excuse.

3. Have a plan for fixing things.
Owning up to a mistake is one thing, but you can’t end it there. What you do next is critical. Instead of standing there, waiting for someone else to clean up your mess, offer your own solutions. It’s even better if you can tell your boss (or whomever) the specific steps that you’ve already taken to get things back on track.

4. Have a plan for prevention. In addition to having a plan for fixing things, you should also have a plan for how you’ll avoid making the same mistake in the future. That’s the best way to reassure people that good things will come out of your failure.

5. Get back on the horse. It’s important that you don’t let failure make you timid. That’s a mindset that sucks you in and handicaps you every time you slip up. Take enough time to absorb the lessons of your failure, and as soon as you’ve done that, get right back out there and try again. Waiting only prolongs bad feelings and increases the chance that you’ll lose your nerve.

Your attitude when facing failure is just as important as the actions you take. Using failure to your advantage requires resilience and mental strength, both hallmarks of emotional intelligence. When you fail, there are three attitudes you want to maintain.

6. Perspective is the most important factor in handling failure. People who are skilled at rebounding after failure are more likely to blame the failure on something that they did–the wrong course of action or a specific oversight–rather than something that they are. People who are bad at handling failure tend to blame failure on their laziness, lack of intelligence, or some other personal quality, which implies that they had no control over the situation. That makes them more likely to avoid future risk-taking.

7. Optimism is another characteristic of people who bounce back from failure. That sense of optimism is what keeps people from feeling like failure is a permanent condition. Instead, they tend to see each failure as a building block to their ultimate success because of the learning it provides.

8. Persistence. Optimism is a feeling of positivity; persistence is what you do with it. It’s optimism in action. When everybody else says, “Enough is enough” and decides to quit and go home, persistent people shake off those failures and keep going. Persistent people are special because their optimism never dies. This makes them great at rising from failure.

Bringing It All Together

Failure is a product of your perspective. What one person considers a crushing defeat, another sees as a minor setback. The beauty is that you can change how you see failure so that you can use it to better yourself.

How do you handle failure? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Would You Be Better Off Spending More Time Alone?

By: Lodro Rinzler

A meditation teacher unpacks an ancient Buddhist text that reveals the answer. It might surprise you.

Maybe you’re like me and you live in a packed city, in a cramped apartment, with a partner and/or roommates, and spend your morning commute cramped amongst people to get to a job where you are constantly surrounded by other beings. And maybe you’re like me in that in the middle of your day you hear a nagging inner voice that says, “You know what? I bet I’d be better off if I had some quiet solo time once in a while.”

There is a beautiful Buddhist text dating back to the 14th century known as the 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva. Bodhi can be translated from Sanskrit as “open” or “awake” while sattva can be translated as “being,” so it is an open-hearted being. A meditation master known as Ngulchu Thogme composed these verses so that we could live a full life with open hearts in order to be helpful to those around us. Many of these practices revolve around applying virtue to even the toughest of our everyday situations. He has one that specifically encourages us to take time to ourselves in order to have the mental and emotional fuel to show up fully for others:

Giving up negative places, mental afflictions gradually decrease.
With no distractions, virtuous activities naturally increase.
When mind becomes clear, certainty in the Dharma is born.
To rely on solitude is the practice of a Bodhisattva

When you hear the term “negative place” what comes to mind? It could be a loud, raucous environment where it’s hard to concentrate on even the simplest of tasks. Or maybe it’s the sort of place that brings out the worst in you–a crowded party with unlimited alcohol and the company of three or more of your exes, a hectic workplace environment, or a bar that you frequent when you feel lonely or ashamed. Whatever your version of a negative place may be, Ngulchu Thogme says that it is important to our spiritual path to give those up. You can discern what this sort of negative place means to you and, as soon as you do, resolve to stop spending so much of your time there.

“Why?” you may ask. “Sure, I’m not my best self when I’m there but that bar has cheap drinks and good music.” Well, according to our friend Ngulchu, giving up negative places is how we calm the mind. Without being provoked by a lot of mental afflictions (read: exes, work stress, alcohol-fueled pity parties) you have the time and space to connect with yourself. The more you take the time to connect to yourself the more at home you are with who you genuinely are. And when you’re actually at home with who you are you’re more likely to engage in virtuous behavior.

Continue reading to learn how to cultivate more solitude.

Your Baby, Your Way

Your Baby, Your Way

Why, despite our state-of-the-art medical technology, does the United States have among the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the industrialized world? Why do pregnant women who are planning to breastfeed receive free samples of infant formula from American obstetricians? Why are American newborns given a vaccine at birth against hepatitis B, a sexually transmitted disease? The Business of Baby, an eye-opening work of investigative journalism, exposes how our current cultural practices during pregnancy, childbirth, and the first year of a baby’s life are not based on the best evidence or the most modern science, revealing how American moms and their babies are being undermined by corporate interests. An illuminating combination of meticulous research and in-depth interviews with parents, doctors, midwives, nurses, health care administrators, and scientists, Margulis’s impassioned and eloquent critique is shocking, groundbreaking, and revelatory. The Business of Baby arms parents with the information they need to make informed decisions about their own health and the health of their infants.

Mississippi Needs Inside Agitators

2016-04-28-1461855977-3208584-StoptheMadnessCLeditorial4192016.jpg

JACKSON. Ah, Mississippi! If the state didn’t exist, the rest of America would have had to invent us. Whenever another state does something particularly outrageous that threatens to lead it to claiming the title of worst, Mississippi can be counted on to save it by doing something worse. After North Carolina became the target of nationwide opprobrium and boycotts because of its “bathroom bill,” Mississippi enacted an even more restrictive “religious freedom” bill, in effect saying to North Carolina: “We’ll see your HB 2 and lower you an HB 1523 – see if you can bottom that!”

Mississippi’s current political leaders travel to the beat of a different dumber.

And they proudly refuse to let another state’s officials slip beneath them.

One is reminded of Lyndon Johnson’s assessment of the state on the morning after the 1964 election, in which Mississippi gave 87 percent of its votes to Barry Goldwater. “I’m sorry about Georgia,” the President said to Bill Moyers. “I didn’t care about the other Southern states. Louisiana’s a bunch of crooks. And Mississippi is too ignorant to know any better, and Alabama’s the same way. But Georgia knows better. And Georgia is a good state.”

♦ ♦ ♦

In a recent tweet, conservative Mississippi columnist Sid Salter succinctly summarized the state’s latest shameful legislation:

“Personal opinion: HB1523 is a solution in search of a problem. Bad public policy. Unnecessary. Wrong. Mean-spirited. Unfair. Discriminatory.”

Many decent people in Mississippi are saying that the anti-LGBT law is the last straw and they will leave the state. That reaction is understandable, but it would be a tragic mistake. During the Civil Rights Movement, Mississippi officials complained about “outside agitators.” But the state then also had inside agitators. It still does, and we must stay and fight for a better future.

In the early 1960s, when the courageous young activists of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee determined that Greenwood and McComb, Mississippi, were two of the three most dangerous places in the country, they didn’t avoid those towns; they went to them. Where would we be if the SNCC activists – or the local people who joined the Movement with them – had given up on Mississippi?

There’s no denying, though, that things are very bad here now. Gov. Phil Bryant and Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves (a man who knows better and so is all the more despicable for pushing laws in which he doesn’t believe in order to win higher office) are channeling the late, far-from-great Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett in pushing bigotry and general stupidity.

2016-04-28-1461856450-4615898-mississippigunsinchurch.jpg

The law protecting the “right” to discriminate is only a part of an astounding array of regressive and foolish actions our state’s lawmakers have taken in recent weeks. The next cut on their newly released album, presumably titled “Mississippi Republicans’ Greatest Misses,” was a bill allowing guns in churches. Gov. Bryant issued a photo of himself grinning as he signed the bill, with a gun sitting on top of the Bible on his desk. Usually reliable sources recounted one reaction: “Jesus wept.” This legislation also allows people without gun permits to carry concealed weapons statewide.

Mississippi’s Republican leaders have been blindly following the lead of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and former Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana along the road of the conservative economic cult of cutting taxes and regulations without regard to the consequences. As a result, this state is now in dire fiscal straits. The solution, according to Lt. Gov. Reeves and other Republicans: more tax cuts! Perhaps they never comprehended the distinction between addition and subtraction.

The state’s Republican rulers have steadfastly refused to accept federal Medicaid expansion. That stance is extraordinarily irresponsible, fiscally as well as morally.

Flying still above the whole mess is the state’s unholy flag with the Confederate stars and bars prominent in it. And Gov. Bryant also issued a proclamation for “Confederate Heritage Month.”

It has gotten so bad that the Clarion-Ledger, the state’s largest newspaper, covered its entire front page recently with an editorial under a headline, in type huge enough to impress Donald Trump, reading “STOP THE MADNESS.”

Lest anyone doubt that there has been great progress in Mississippi, let me cite an earlier front-page editorial in a Jackson paper. Following the Supreme Court’s 1954 decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case, the Jackson Daily News ran a front-page editorial titled “Bloodstains on White Marble Steps,” saying – and implicitly calling for – bloodshed across the South.

2016-04-28-1461881242-5353706-BloodstainsonWhiteMarbleSteps2.jpg

The day after the Madness editorial, state House Speaker Philip Gunn used a voice vote to perpetuate a portion of the madness by voting down the first effort at campaign finance and ethics reform the state has seen in decades. This maneuver allows Mississippi politicians to continue to spend campaign money for personal purposes without any accounting.

♦ ♦ ♦

All of this is awful, but if we inside agitators stay, we can turn it around. Here’s a striking example of how positive change can be accomplished by determined people within the state:

For more than eighty years, Natchez has had an annual “pilgrimage” to its antebellum mansions, featuring each evening a Confederate Pageant that glorified the “Lost Cause” and totally ignored the evils of slavery. Two years ago, one of our Millsaps College history majors, Madeline Iles, was chosen for the town’s greatest honor: to be the pageant queen. She decided that she would not accept unless major changes were made in the pageant to show the horrors of slavery and acknowledge the Confederate defeat. Her insistence on bringing historical truth into the moonlight and magnolias fantasy that had reigned for eight decades led those running the pageant to agree to allow Madeline’s father, author Greg Iles, to rewrite several of the tableaux in the production, bringing in a slave auction and other aspects of the evil institution, with such songs as “Oh, Freedom!” and “A Change Is Gonna Come” performed by African Americans.

2016-04-28-1461883716-8821651-2016nussbaumiles.jpg

The change that came to the Natchez pageant wasn’t easy, but in the end it proved to be profound – and that change was accomplished by “inside agitators.”

If we (I have been agitating from inside Mississippi since my arrival in the state more than forty years ago, with only a few death threats), left the state, the forces of backwardness would continue to dominate.

If we stay and fight, we can – we will – win. The madness can be stopped.

Despite surface appearances, Mississippi is by no means beyond hope. There is so much that is wonderful about the state’s cultural heritage, particularly in music and literature. I, for example, have proposed replacing the current flag and its divisive symbol of hate with one featuring a guitar, reflecting Mississippi’s position as the birthplace of America’s music – a heritage in which both races have participated.

2016-04-28-1461856120-7148410-MSGuitarFlag2brightblue.jpg

There are a large number of good white people in Mississippi. Combined with the highest percentage of African Americans in any American state, we can change our leadership and redeem Mississippi. Assuming 90 percent of African Americans would vote Democratic, if both races turned out at about the same rate, it would take only 25 percent of whites voting Democratic to turn this state blue and away from the disastrous policies currently being promoted. Distaste for Donald Trump, especially among white women, coupled with the disgracefulness of the actions by the state’s Republican leaders, may have put that share of the white vote within our grasp. A recent Mason-Dixon poll found Hillary Clinton in a virtual tie with Trump in Mississippi.

While the Republican misleaders of Mississippi are painting the state a bright red to turn it upside down, we’re painting it too – but we’re painting it blue.

This is no time for Mississippi’s inside agitators to give up the fight.

How Mentally Strong People Evaluate Others

2016-04-28-1461848166-20817-445084564_9695bd6a14_b.jpg

This article first appeared on the blog of Intentional Insights, a nonprofit organization that empowers people to refine and reach their goals by providing research-based content to help improve thinking, feeling, and behavior patterns.

So imagine you are driving on autopilot, as we all do much of the time. Suddenly the car in front of you cuts you off quite unexpectedly. You slam your brakes and feel scared and indignant. Maybe you flash your lights or honk your horn at the other car. What’s your gut feeling about the other driver? I know my first reaction is that the driver is rude and obnoxious.

Now imagine a different situation. You’re driving on autopilot, minding your own business, and you suddenly realize you need to turn right at the next intersection. You quickly switch lanes and suddenly hear someone behind you honking their horn. You now realize that there was someone in your blind spot and you forgot to check it in the rush to switch lanes. So you cut them off pretty badly. Do you feel that you are a rude driver? The vast majority of us do not. After all, we did not deliberately cut that car off, we just failed to see the driver. Or let’s imagine another situation: say your friend hurt herself and you are rushing her to the emergency room. You are driving aggressively, cutting in front of others. Are you a rude driver? Not generally. You’re merely doing the right thing for the situation.

So why do we give ourselves a pass, while attributing an obnoxious status to others? Why does our gut always make us out to be the good guys, and other people bad guys?

Clearly, there is a disconnect between our gut reaction and reality here. It turns out that this pattern is not a coincidence. Basically, our immediate gut reaction attributes the behavior of others to their personality and not to their situation in which the behavior occurs. The scientific name for this type of error in thinking and feeling is called the fundamental attribution error, also called the correspondence bias.

So if we see someone behaving rudely, we immediately and intuitively feel that this person IS rude. We don’t automatically stop to consider whether an unusual situation may cause someone to act this way. With the driver example, maybe the person who cut you off did not see you. Or maybe they were driving their friend to the emergency room. But that’s not what our automatic reaction tells us. On the other hand, we attribute our own behavior to the situation, and not our personality. Much of the time, we feel like we have valid explanations for our actions.

Learning about the fundamental attribution error helped me quite a bit. I became less judgmental about others. I realized that the people around me were not nearly as bad as my gut feelings immediately and intuitively assumed. This decreased my stress levels, and I gained more peace and calm. Moreover, I realized that my intuitive self-evaluation is excessively positive and that in reality I am not quite the good guy as my gut reaction tells me. Additionally, I realized that those around me who are unaware of this thinking and feeling error, are more judgmental of me than my intuition suggested. So I am striving to be more mindful and thoughtful about the impression I make on others.

The fundamental attribution error is one of many problems in our natural thinking and feeling patterns. It is certainly very helpful to learn about all of these errors, but it’s hard to focus on avoiding all of them in our daily life. A more effective strategy for evaluating reality more intentionally is to have more clarity and thus gain greater agency is known as map and territory

This strategy involves recognizing the difference between the mental map of the world that we have in our heads and the reality of the actual world as it exists — the territory.

For myself, internalizing this concept has not been easy. It’s been painful to realize that my understanding of the world is by definition never perfect, as my map will never match the territory. At the same time, this realization was strangely freeing. It made me recognize that no one is perfect, and that I do not have to strive for perfection in my view of the world. Instead, what would most benefit me is to try to refine my map to make it more accurate. This more intentional approach made me more willing to admit to myself that though I intuitively and emotionally feel something is right, I may be mistaken.

At the same time, the concept of map and territory makes me really optimistic, because it provides a constant opportunity to learn and improve my assessment of the situation. Others to whom I taught this concept in videotaped workshops also benefited from learning about both the fundamental attribution error and the idea of map and territory. One workshop participant wrote in an anonymous feedback form: “with relation to the fundamental attribution error, it can give me a chance to keep a more open mind. Which will help me to relate to others more, and view a different view of the ‘map’ in my head.”

Now, what are the strategies for most effectively learning this information, and internalizing the behaviors and mental patterns that can help you succeed? Well, educational psychology research illustrates that engaging with this information actively personalizing it to your life, linking it to your goals and deciding on a plan and specific next steps you will take are the best practices for this purpose. So take the time to answer the questions below to gain long-lasting benefit from reading this article:

  • What do you think of the concept of map and territory?
  • How can it be used to address the fundamental attribution error?
  • Where can the notion of map and territory help you in your life?
  • What challenges might arise in applying this concept, and how can these challenges be addressed?
  • What plan can you make and what specific steps can you take to internalize these strategies?

What to Do If Your Partner Is Using Drugs

Secrecy. Lies. Numbing. Evidence. Chaos. Broken Trust. Loneliness. Confusion. Hurt. Pain. Uncertainty.

If drugs (which, for the sake of this post will encompass any alcohol, prescription meds, narcotics, or substances that can be overused and abused) have found a presence in your relationship, these words may have a familiar ring to them.

Our world today has become more understanding of the process of addiction and the recognition of the effects of drugs on the brain, body, and mental state of those we love. Support groups surround the communities we live in, and treatment centers have many options on ways to help individuals and families get through the terrors of addiction and into a life of hope, recovery, and rekindled connection.

But, what do you do if you are unfamiliar with the solution? If you’ve never heard of AA, NA, treatment centers, which books to read, or who to reach out to, this can feel like a world of unknown.

How do you act around your partner?

What do you say? What do you do?

Here are a few things to consider if you believe (or know) that drugs have entered your relationship and are being overused or abused by your partner:

Don’t stay quiet.

It is unfortunate that you are in this situation, but remaining silent about a problem will only prolong it. Express your concerns and fears to your partner and ask them if they would like to receive help. Stand up for the health of your partner, yourself, and your relationship. Try your best not to personalize any defensiveness or criticism you feel comes your way. Defense mechanisms are ways that individuals emotionally protect themselves. The main priority here is to find out where your partner can be professionally assessed and helped into treatment. If they refuse, then your priority becomes finding yourself support.

Set boundaries. Don’t enable.

Depending on the severity of the situation, boundaries are going to be a huge part of keeping yourself safe and helping your partner understand the seriousness of where you stand. As Brene Brown says, “boundaries are what is and what is not okay.” If something is happening that you have voiced is not acceptable to you, then it is not acceptable. You cannot control your partner’s actions, but you can remove yourself from a situation that you do not want to be a part of. This may look like walking into another room, leaving for the evening, or going to stay at a trusted friend’s house for the night. Sometimes this is the most loving thing you can do for a person.

Enabling is one of the most common behaviors that family members and partners find themselves doing with a partner who is engaging in substance abuse. This means you are inadvertently allowing the drug use to continue by not doing anything about it or by not allowing them to experience their own consequences (calling in sick to work for them, lying to family about why they haven’t been around lately, buying them alcohol or picking up more prescriptions when you know they will be overused).

2016-04-28-1461879174-3875922-girl1149933_1920.jpg

Know that this is not about you, but also become aware of your part in the dynamic.

Certainly, there may have been things you have said or done that may have led your partner to drink or drug. But you did not cause the persistence of their substance abuse. You cannot make them do anything. There are many components to the progression of an addiction (genetic predispositions, past trauma, mental health issues/depression or anxiety, and shame).

What you can focus on right now is your part in the current dynamic. Are you engaging in arguments and conversations when your partner has used substances (or when you have)? Do you find yourself fighting with them to prove your point? Do you lose control of your own emotions and feel completely overrun by your feelings of frustration, anxiety, or anger? Become aware of how you may be contributing to negative interactions, and do your best to remove yourself from those interactions before they become heightened. You may feel like you are “losing a battle” in the moment, but long term you are really setting a healthy boundary that shows you will not be a part of this dynamic in the relationship anymore.

Find a trusted source.

You do not need to be alone right now. Floating around in your own head full of questions, pain, and anxieties will only become a part of the problem if you do not reach out. Find someone that you trust. In this case, if you are hoping to work through this with your partner, it may be best to reach out to a professional (even if you do so alone). I recommend finding someone who has experience with substance abuse (inpatient or IOP experience).

Reaching out to family members at this point may create an alliance or bias against your partner and, while this may seem like the right move to take in the moment, this could create longer term issues for you as a couple. Just as support becomes one of the main sources of recovery for the individual with the substance abuse issue, so is it necessary for your own healing and recovery.

The beginning of this experience in relationships often feels hopeless, frustrating, and scary. If you are the partner of someone engaging in substance abuse, I hope the message in this post is clear: reach out and find help. If not for your partner (if they refuse), for yourself so that you may acquire some tools, skills, and understanding on how to move forward in the best way possible. There is no easy way to deal with an addiction, but often times there are small changes that you can begin making now that may positively influence your relationship.

Senator Warns Zika Is About To Get Real: ‘The Mosquitoes Are Coming’

WASHINGTON — Democrats spent much of Wednesday reminding Republicans that mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus are now spreading to the U.S. In fact, there are already a good number present in 30 states.

“The mosquitoes are coming,” Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) told reporters. “The mosquitoes are already here. You can’t build a fence to keep them out, and the mosquitoes won’t pay for it. The mosquitoes are here — this is not a [President Barack] Obama fantasy.”

A handful of House Democrats joined their Senate counterparts to put pressure on Republicans regarding a $ 1.9 billion request by the White House to combat the virus, which causes microcephaly and other fetal brain defects.

Senate Republicans signaled interest last week in working with Democrats to push through emergency funding for Zika, which is threatening thousands of U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said this week that appropriators are working to get to the right number. Republicans are floating less than the amount Obama requested, but more than $ 1 billion.

Democrats want the full amount. With little chance of a vote on emergency funding ahead of Congress’ break next week, Democrats lined up to vent their frustrations.

“Senate Republicans finally said last week they were willing to work with us,” said Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). “I was encouraged by our conversations. But it has been nearly a week since we have had those conversations.”

Republicans are now trying to find offsets for emergency Zika funding to appease members within their conference, and are also considering attaching Zika funds to the appropriations process. Democrats are opposed to both approaches, arguing that the appropriations process is too slow and that offsets are unnecessary.

“If this is not an emergency, there is nothing that is,” said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). “No floods, no earthquake, no fire, nothing will be an emergency if this isn’t.”

Reid added that he has yet to see a piece of paper with a specific dollar amount from Republicans. He wouldn’t say whether Democrats would accept a slightly smaller amount than what they’ve already asked for.

“We are down to budget priorities that cannot be cut further,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said.

“We are less than 100 days out from the Olympics in Brazil,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.). “We should have acted long ago. This is a true emergency.”

Brazil has been devastated by the virus, recording 91,000 new cases of Zika this year alone.

Speaking to The Huffington Post, DeLauro added that health officials have voiced serious concern over the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

“Our athletes will be frightened when they go,” DeLauro said. “Their families will be frightened. If there is anything that can be determined between now and then that they can avail themselves of in order to protect themselves, then let’s get to it.”

The only way athletes and others traveling to Brazil will be prepared, DeLauro said, is if emergency money is made available for research, diagnostics and vaccines.

What kind of tone are health officials displaying in meetings? DeLauro summed it up in one word — “anxiety.”

Earlier this month, officials said they would start to redirect over $ 500 million that Congress had already approved to battle Ebola. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned that if Congress did not provide emergency money for Zika, officials would need to dip into pots for research on malaria and tuberculosis.

I Never Experienced Parenthood Until I Became My Mother’s Caretaker

2016-04-27-1461786538-4400435-ScreenShot20160427at12.47.08PM.png

“Who’s Your Mama?”

By the time I was 20, I was sure having children wasn’t for me. It was a conscious decision, but to fully understand the reason why, not so simple. To this day, I cannot fully answer why my desire was to live my life childless. I have no regrets with that life choice or any others I have made along the way.

How could I have known at 54 years old the essence of a child would enter my life in the guise of a mother challenged by Alzheimer’s? I did not ask for this, but it is the current chapter of my life. What this flip-flopped role of daughter becoming mother has shown me is what a wonderful mother I would have been… what a wonderful “mother” I am!

My role reversal with mom is nothing short of amazing. The dynamic of being thrust into this “parental” role is life-changing. I have learned to embrace this frail being whose existence has become dependency and helplessness. Her emotional tantrums that seem to flair up when things don’t go just as she expected. No fault of her own, of course, just another result of the disconnect in her thought process from her disease.

How could I have known at 54 years old the essence of a child would enter my life in the guise of a mother challenged by Alzheimer’s?

Preparing healthy meals and snacks and administering medications are daily affairs. Gently cleansing her 86 year old body in lavender suds as she clings to me in the shower. Pulling her outfits out for the day and often getting vetoed by her for my blouse or trouser choice due to color or fabric. Transporting her to appointments and engagements to keep her healthy. Scolding her for mishaps, only to later embrace her with warm hugs and apologies. Washing her clothes, paying the bills, cleaning our home to make her feel safe and secure.

It is truly like raising a child.

There is only one difference and it is a very big one. As our parents did all these wondrous life caring tasks for us as children, we learned just how truly fortunate we were. As we aged, we gained a deep and loving appreciation for them that would grow as we grew. We learned how to reward their efforts by making them proud of us with our journeys in life.

With the Alzheimer’s “child,” the “parent” and their care are usually forgotten in the flash of a moment. They live in the moment, but as it slides past, they have no recollection of the delicious dinner or the warm towel wrapped around them after their shower. They don’t remember who the gift was from at Christmas or that the cake was in celebration of their birthday. They cannot be thankful for their caregivers attention to the administering of medication because as soon as they swallow the pills they have forgotten they have been given them.

Looking into her sweet, sunken eyes and knowing she is safe is enough reward for me.

It certainly is not that they don’t appreciate you as you place their dinner upon the flowered placemat or apply the moisturizer to their dry winter skin or clean the lenses on their eyeglasses. It’s just as soon as you finish this caring gesture, in their afflicted mind, it is gone. They don’t remember any of it.

So my “child” does not strive to make me proud with good grades or personal accomplishments. She just needs me. She needs my mind for hers is failing. And my “child” does not need to make me proud, for my pride comes in knowing I am doing the best I can for her. I do not need accolades. Looking into her sweet, sunken eyes and knowing she is safe is enough reward for me.

And as I tuck her into bed this evening and kiss her on the forehead, I will turn out the light knowing I was the best “mother” I could be.

Continuing the Journey to Becoming Pain Free

By: Pete Egoscue

Watch episode three of the new video series “Becoming Pain Free,” to follow one man’s journey in eliminating chronic pain naturally with the help of the Egoscue Method.

Severe or chronic pain affects nearly 50 million American adults, reports a new study prepared by National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, which was published in The Journal of Pain last summer. About half of these people are suffering from chronic pain every single day. Steven, the subject of Sonima.com‘s new video series called “Becoming Pain Free,” is one of them.

The 34-year-old independent filmmaker and photographer, who just moved to Los Angeles with his wife, Melanie, and 5-year-old son, Victor, has been battling consistent joint pain in his legs, wrists, and lower back–a byproduct of his profession that requires holding heavy camera equipment for hours–for about nine years. It’s common for Steven to wake up with numb arms and feet and unable to walk. When doctors couldn’t help him address the pain, he turned to Pete Egoscue, Sonima.com’s pain and anatomy advisor, author of multiple books including Pain Free, and creator of the Egoscue Method, an exercise therapy program–taught at more than 25 clinics worldwide–designed to treat chronic pain without prescription painkillers or invasive surgery.

In episode three of this video series, Steven shares a glimpse of the changes he’s making to support a healthier lifestyle, including more nutritious dietary choices and a daily exercise routine recommended by his Egoscue specialist. Watch the episode to learn more about this fitness routine, including the one move Steven calls his “biggest nemesis,” which he sets his sights on mastering in the coming weeks.

Get Ready For The Veepstakes, Everybody!

For all we argue which American presidents were successful and which were failures, one has to be impressed with the glowing achievements of American vice presidents. Whenever a president is dead, or being driven from office, the vice president must rise to the occasion, and be not-dead, and not-being-driven-from-office. In this regard, our vice presidents have assembled a glowing track record of sustained excellence.

Who will be the next man or woman to add their name to this legend? This is a matter that the media has suddenly begun to take up in earnest, perhaps sensing that this year’s primary elections are now more or less decided, and it’s time to now move to the next chapter of the story of this election — the one in which the media ponders what’s at stake in the choosing of a running mate in a race to find out which pundit can overthink it the most.

Over the weekend, The New York Times reported that the Clinton campaign had “begun extensive discussions” about her running mate. The paper’s headline notes that the campaign is “cautious but confident,” probably because some spokesperson said, “We are cautious but confident.” I don’t know how you are supposed to fact-check this, but there you go: They are neither reckless nor terrified.

Many names found themselves to be afloat in the Times’ reporting. Because Clinton has envisioned her presidential mission as one of “barrier-breaking,” in which the nation’s economic ends are met by encouraging a continuing diversification of elite aeries, some of those names are Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, former Massachusetts Gov.r Deval Patrick, and Obama administration Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, who worked for the late Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy.

As the media will make much of Clinton’s need to appeal to working-class white men (and people with more limited connections to Massachusetts), many of the people named are also white guys: Virginia Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, and Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown.

In case you were wondering, yes, Clinton would be open to running with another woman on the ticket. One can easily imagine that this might be the sort of thing that the media could get a little overexcited about, and not necessarily to good purposes. A distant early warning of how that might be received came over the weekend, when former Obama communications director Anita Dunn was asked if Hillary Clinton really could pick another woman as her vice president, as if there was some legal obstacle preventing this arrangement. Dunn replied, “There is some precedent for having a running mate of the same gender.” Bu-bu-bu-but, penises?

According to The Washington Post’s Robert Costa and Philip Rucker, the veep-game is afoot in GOP circles as well. The campaigns of John Kasich and Ted Cruz have apparently already begun their vetting processes, which seems pretty premature, when you consider the delegate count in that race. They report that the man atop the delegate count, Donald Trump, has given the matter some “serious thought,” but has not made it a focus of his campaign, which seems pretty tardy, when you consider the delegate — you get the idea.

The results of Trump’s vice-presidential ministrations are going to be of enormous interest, given the fact that he has a) cast himself as an outsider-basher of the establishment and yet b) desperately needs some insider-establishment type to explain to him basic things, like what a president does, and how Congress works. At the moment, Trump is still getting up to speed on what a “delegate” is, so it’s understandable that he’s lagging in the Veepstakes.

Trump’s vice-presidential pick will also be a person of interest, in that once Trump discovers that the presidency is a low-prestige job that involves constant criticism, unending demands, and the congenital inability to get Congress to agree to the executive branch vision, there’s a good chance he’ll just quit, leaving his running mate with the bag.

But I have to give Trump some credit: I’ve never heard a president talk about what’s at stake in the choosing of a vice president with greater realism. As The Washington Post reports:

Trump, who said he wants to pick an experienced political leader, may calculate that he needs a bridge to mainstream Republicans who see his candidacy as radioactive.

“There are two advantages: They can help you with the system, and the politicians have been vetted,” Trump said in the interview. “That’s the biggest advantage to a politician — their whole life they’ve been vetted and you know everything, whereas if I pick some guy out of a great corporation who has done a job, you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Besides demonstrating that they can draw breath and circulate blood, that’s literally all a vice president brings a ticket — a surfeit of institutional knowledge and, hopefully, a past free of scandal. There are literally no further advantages a vice-presidential prospect can bring to the ticket.

Unfortunately for all of us, the Veepstakes is essentially a long-winded exercise in determining how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. If we are at the beginning stage of the Running Of The Running Mates, that means we have a staggering number of hours to endure, in which prospective candidates are hefted for demographic advantages and probed for home-state benefits.

Can the right candidate deliver a larger share of voters from a swing state? Could a certain candidate help maximize turnout from some voting bloc? We are at the precipice of these possibilities being picked to death by pundits eager to battle their colleagues in their traditional game of Sunday morning panel one-upsmanship.

So let’s head all of that off at the pass. The home state of the vice-presidential pick? Their ethnicity? Their gender? Their religion? None of that matters. That needle won’t jump. You can stop fretting about it.

Over at The Washington Post’s Monkey Cage blog, Christopher J. Devine and Kyle C. Kopko break out all the relevant research on the matter of vice-presidential prestidigitation, and their overarching conclusion is that it more or less fails to amount to a hill of beans, provided that the presidential candidate remembers to literally not choose an actual hill of beans as their partner-in-crime. (Which, to be honest, is too bad. I for one would vastly prefer to hear what Hill Of Beans has to say about the state of contemporary politics and its preferred policy platform than I would, say … Carly Fiorina.)

Does the right vice-presidential candidate offer the ticket a home-state advantage? According to Devine and Kopko, in some limited instances, when the vice-presidential pick “comes from a relatively less populous state and has served that state for many years as an elected official,” it can. This benefit is then immediately offset by the fact that “less-populous states have very few electoral votes, thus making them unlikely to flip the outcome in the Electoral College.”

Other than that, the home-state benefit is straight-up tugging at ghosts: “No matter the empirical method,” they write, “we consistently find that the vice- presidential home state advantage is, statistically speaking, zero.”

What about the idea that diversity on the ticket might bring a greater share of some demographic subgroup’s favor on Election Day? There, the science is incomplete, as there are no real-world examples of a major party selecting a Latino (or an African-American, or an Asian-American) as their vice-presidential candidate. But in analyzing “the performance of some other would-be breakthrough candidates” — such as Geraldine Ferraro, Sarah Palin, and Joe Lieberman — the relevant political science indicates that these choices result in some positive feelings toward these picks from voters who share their demographic identity.

But that’s as far as it goes. Per Devine and Kopko:

But again, more positive feelings toward the running mate do not necessarily translate into more votes. Controlling for a range of relevant covariates (such as age, income, party identification), gender is not a statistically significant predictor of vote choice in 1984 or 2008. Nor is Catholic identification in 1972, 1984, 2008 or 2012. The one exception is in 2000, when Jewish voters were significantly more likely to vote for the Gore/Lieberman ticket. But in a subsequent pooled analysis of presidential vote choice, Jewish respondents to the ANES proved to be significantly more likely to vote for the Democratic candidate in each presidential election since 1960. Further analysis shows that Jews didn’t feel more warmly toward Lieberman than toward the average Democratic running mate. So it’s not clear that Lieberman’s candidacy actually brought more Jewish votes to the 2000 Democratic ticket.

So, that’s a dead end as well.

Recently, the U.S. News and World Report’s Susan Milligan reported on the work of a “bipartisan team of veteran campaign managers and political historians,” who took up the task of evaluating how to pick the perfect vice president for the Bipartisan Policy Center. The way Milligan distills these experts’ ideal process into a series of steps basically boils down to this:

  1. Take a deep breath, and come up with some names.

  2. Vet their public records.

  3. Narrow the choices and vet them again, this time taking an “‘intrusive’ look at the contenders’ personal lives, including medical and financial matters that could be embarrassing to the ticket.”

  4. Tell your prospects to their faces what you found out and browbeat them into revealing if there’s anything that was not “unearthed but which could come out in the media.”

  5. Make a choice and then pray you did your due diligence and that you didn’t pick a liar.

Based upon Milligan’s reporting, the impaneled experts didn’t have anything to say about whether it’s necessary to find the right guy to help you swing Wisconsin, or the pick that’s got the magic touch to bringing out, say, more Asian-Pacific islanders to the polls. The process of picking a vice president is nothing more than a brutal, medieval endoscopy into the personal and political lives of people with whom you might spend the most important years of your political career. Hopefully, you find someone who survives that process, after which, you can simply just be hopeful that you, too, survive.

Still, this idea that the right vice-presidential pick might confer some sort of hidden electoral advantage — like they’re some walking political cheat-code — is a compelling story. And it’s understandable why a campaign would like to indulge in this sort of stagecraft. After all, what the selection is really all about is finding someone to fill a rather macabre political role who doesn’t load down the ticket with a bunch of dreadful liabilities. At the end of that process, you don’t want to have to talk about the intensity or the intrusiveness of the vetting process. So, hey, instead, come up with a fun story about how your running mate is someone who has hidden, ineffable strengths.

Maybe such spin is silly. Still, like I said from the outset, this system has worked beautifully: All of our vice presidents have successfully performed the task of remaining a living, breathing vessel of human consciousness, and none have revealed themselves to be the Zodiac Killer, not even Spiro Agnew, although it was pretty touch-and-go there for a while.

How to Survive a Crisis: 5 Steps to Shift Your Mindset

These are challenging times in an unstable world and chances are likely that you will one day struggle to survive a crisis of some sort. Whether it comes in the form of a relationship breaking up, an unexpected illness, the death of a loved one, a financial setback, or the loss of your job, there are many ways that crisis can touch your life and pull you down into despair and anxiety.

During these tough times, when things fall apart, the best way to survive is to have your own personal strategy for coping with stress and gradually putting the pieces back together again. It’s normal to experience shock and self-pity in the early stages of a crisis, but the sooner you can regroup and turn your attention to more positive actions, the faster you’ll be on your way to recovery.

However, it’s important to not repress your feelings of sadness and grief. Accept and embrace all of your emotions, but give some of your attention to positive behaviors that can slowly lift you back up to a place of functioning. As the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr states:

“Grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”

The crisis we are experiencing and our emotions about it usually cannot be changed–they simply must be accepted as they are. But what can be changed is our mindset: how we view the event that has occurred and the actions that we take as a result of that view. Here is a five-step strategy for a “mindset makeover” to help you look at life’s challenges with the serenity, courage and wisdom you need to survive:

1. Gratitude

This first step may seem counter-intuitive in the midst of a crisis: how can you be thankful when destruction is all around you? But it is crucial to your survival that you spend some time each day looking for reasons to be grateful, no matter how thin or fragile they might be.

Even within the deepest suffering there is still beauty: music, poetry, the colors of the sunset, laughter, hugs, trees. Find just one thing to be thankful for every day and hold on to that thread: there is goodness–somewhere, somehow–in everything.

2. Release Your Expectations

When things fall apart you can be crushed by the reality that your hopes and expectations for the future have disintegrated. The more you are attached to your desires for something that can no longer happen, the more your suffering intensifies.

See yourself letting go, one-by-one, of each of your dreams that have been shattered. Even though you might feel empty inside when you give up your expectations, remember that you are making space for something new that is yet to come.

3. Awareness in the Present Moment

Try to keep your focus on what’s happening right here, right now, rather than dwelling on the past or future. Creativity, love and healing exist only in the present moment and your thoughts and energy need to be focused on the here and now in order to receive the benefits of those forces.

Resist the urge to numb yourself or “check out” so that you won’t have to feel the emotions that are arising within you. Instead, take some deep breaths to help you ground in the present moment and welcome whatever feelings come into your awareness.

4. Compassion for Yourself and Others

During a time of hardship it is important to find love wherever you can–and if you are really looking for it you will see that love is everywhere. But dark times and suffering can cloud your ability to recognize love and you might even feel that love has disappeared from your world.

Cultivate compassion on a daily basis by sitting quietly for a few minutes and imagining that you are breathing in love for yourself until you are filled with positive energy. Then breathe out love, first for those around you who are suffering, then for all living beings, then for the entire planet, and finally, the entire Universe. By practicing each day you will gradually increase your capacity to recognize love and to share it in everything that you do.

5. Equanimity

To survive a crisis you will need to strengthen your ability to find balance and peace, even in the middle of a raging storm. No matter how chaotic your life seems right now, there is within you a place of tranquility and calm, but you might not be familiar with it if you haven’t yet learned to quiet your mind.

One exercise to broaden your center of calmness is to focus your attention within and imagine yourself floating on a raft in perfectly still water. Keep taking slow deep breaths as you watch the storms that are raging around you gradually dissipate. The more you practice connecting with your still center now, the more you will be able to discover equanimity when a disaster occurs in your life.

If you are able to face your next crisis with the G.R.A.C.E. of these 5 steps, you will likely discover that there is a hidden jewel within each tragedy. You will learn how to grow through life’s challenges and become the best person you can possibly be, while also finding meaning in every twist and turn of existence. You will then become an alchemist who can convert the leaden moments of life into gold and find that you are rich beyond your wildest imagination.

To do further exercises with these 5 steps of G.R.A.C.E. you can download The Mindshift Blueprint here.

The Mountain’s Daily Diet Is More Shocking Than Anything On ‘Game Of Thrones’

You want a “mountain” body? You better eat b**ch.

At least that’s what “Game of Thrones” actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (he goes by Thor for short) does to achieve his massive frame. Björnsson, who is currently in competition to be the World’s Strongest Man, plays Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane, a now Frankenstein-like monster with a penchant for violence and the ability to “take the head off a horse with a single swing of his sword.”

Horse decapitations aren’t for the weak-bodied apparently, because Björnsson has to consume an insane amount of food to keep himself in shape. The Icelandic strongman shared his daily diet on social media to satiate fans’ curiosities about what it takes to be the “Mountain.”

*Spoiler alert* he eats a s**t ton of eggs

Read his full post below.

7 Books That Will Change Your Life

2016-04-07-1460059913-445414-bookreader.jpg

Over the past few years I’ve been on a learning and self-discovery journey and have come across some amazing books that have literally transformed my life.

A wise man once told me “the greatest investment that you can ever make is in yourself.” How true! And these books have helped me to make a wonderful investment in myself and my personal growth.

All of these books have the power to change your life for the better – they will challenge the way you think, what you believe to be true and help you to create a life that’s happier and more fulfilling.

Take some time to discover your best self, and learn some amazing, life-changing wisdom along the way.

1. Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill

Hill researched almost fifty millionaires to learn how they used their personal strengths to reap maximum benefit then compiled this “how to” guide to teach others how to do the same. Many experts recommend this book for personal growth and mindset as well as wealth.

2. You Can Be Happy No Matter What: Five Principles for Keeping Life in Perspective by Richard Carlson, Ph.D.

Carlson shows readers how to be happy right now — no matter their situation is. This book guides you through life’s challenges and restores the joy of living.

3. The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be by Jack Canfield

In this book, Canfield helps you get from where you are to where you want to be by teaching you how to increase your confidence, tackle daily challenges, live with passion and purpose, and realize all your ambitions.

4. Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting: The Astonishing Power of Feelings by Lynn Grabhorn

Grabhorn reveals how to invite positive things into your life by focusing on what you want. She shows you that all it takes is a few bursts of pure, intense concentration. If you allow yourself to start believing in what you can accomplish instead of what you can’t positive change will start to happen.

5. Amazing Things Will Happen: A Real-World Guide on Achieving Success and Happiness by CC Chapman

This book offers straightforward advice that can easily be put into action to improve your life. It demonstrates how to achieve success and happiness, in all aspects of your life.

6. Shift Happens: How to Live an Inspired Life…Starting Right Now! by Robert Holden, Ph.D.

This book is about staying open to miracles. Success, love, and happiness are only ever one thought away at most. One new perception, one fresh thought, one act of surrender, one leap of faith, can change your life forever.

7. You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay

What we think about ourselves becomes the truth for us. Hay believes that everyone is responsible for everything in their lives, the best and the worst. Every thought we think is creating our future. Each one of us creates our experiences by our thoughts and our feelings.

Get inspired and motivated as you indulge in this collection and most importantly, act on what you learn!

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post

Doulas For The Dying

When I tell people that I am an end-of-life doula, their first question is: what is that? The second question is why? The “what” is simple to answer: it is a volunteer who accompanies a person on their final journey. We are not hospice. We do not administer medication. We are there only to soothe the passage from the known world into whatever an individual believes awaits them.

The “why” is more complicated. I tell them: I do it because I can. I can “do” death. The dying process does not frighten me. It might when it is my turn to look death in the eye — but for now — I am unafraid.

When I was 41, a dear friend who I had known since grade school died of HIV/AIDS. I attended him in his final days. I was scared then. I was afraid of life without him, I was afraid of the actual cessation of his breath, I was afraid of being with a dead body. But my fear was unfounded. To the contrary, being able to be there with him during the last hours of his life was a gift from him to me. It informed me about living in a way that nothing had before.

I witnessed the miracle of life as I attended to his dying, playing the music he loved, massaging his hands and feet, bringing good, sweet smells to his bedside. I told him stories from our youth as the clock chimed his final hours. And then it was over. I sat with his sister until the wee hours of the morning, sipping red wine, reminiscing. He was a gentle soul and we basked in his spirit until the first light of dawn.

There is this bridge at the very moment of death when you see life leave the body. It’s an inexplicable suspension of time, when a day, an hour, a lifetime passes in a flash. There is air in the lungs, the blood moves, the heart pumps. And then it doesn’t. I think of this moment often when I am feeling sick or sorry for myself. I think: my heart beats, the blood flows, I am alive. Get up and get moving. Live in the world. Make the best of these numbered days of conscious being.

I was present for the death of both my in-laws. I could feel the palpable reluctance of my mother-in-law to leave. She did not wish to separate from her husband, to leave him on his own. We had to encourage him to lie down next to her in those last days, to hold her and warm her with his own body heat. Her spirit and her body struggled with each other days longer than her doctor anticipated. Surrounded by family, she finally succumbed. Two days later, the rails inside her closet collapsed, sending all her clothing to a jumbled heap on the floor. She did not go easily and she wanted us to know that. My father-in-law, on the other hand, at the age of 96, didn’t want us to fuss. With his customary aplomb and determination, he left swiftly to join his beloved. Within five minutes of death, the house he shared with his wife of 61 years was cold and deserted.

As I sat beside an elderly gentleman during my last vigil, I noticed the birds gathering along the eaves of his home. When I pointed this out to his daughter, she told me he liked to feed them and had bird feeders set up throughout the yard. As the day progressed and his death drew nearer, the birds came by the dozens and perched on the branches outside the window. It was remarkable. I believe they came to witness and say thank you to a spirit that spoke to theirs. Each death is unique. Each death has something to teach us about living.

I liken the experience of being an end-of-life doula with that of being present at the birth of a baby. When a mother is in labor everyone runs to the hospital with outstretched arms. “Can I hold her?” they ask the nurse. “My turn,” they insist. It is a natural instinct to want to welcome new life. When someone is dying, when they are leaving us for the last time, I think it is just as important to say “Can I hold her?” “It’s my turn.” To hold the hand of a dying individual is to see them out of this world in the same way we welcome a baby into it. They are both journeys of transition, ultimately experienced alone but not without company. To shepherd someone into this life or out of it is a truly rare opportunity, a remarkable experience, and in my humble opinion, an obligation.

Will Hillary Repudiate Bill on the China Trade?

Reprinted By Permission The National Interest

VIEW VIDEO OF BILL CLINTON LOBBYING FOR CHINA’S WTO ENTRY

Will Hillary Repudiate Bill on Trade?
A rock and a hard place. Scylla and Charybdis. Sanders and Trump. These are just some of the metaphors and men Hillary Clinton finds herself caught between on the trade issue.

In truth, Hillary’s ultimate problem in the 2016 presidential race may not be Benghazi, Emailgate, Filegate, Monica, Pardongate, Vince Foster, Whitewater, or a broad-based perception of a cold, calculating, and untrustworthy woman. Instead, it may simply be America’s ill-considered trade deals – and the pivotal role her husband Bill has played in selling American workers down the offshoring road.

It’s bad enough President Bill, with Hillary’s support, signed the NAFTA agreement in 1993. The Clinton spin here was that we had to help Mexico build up its manufacturing and jobs base to stem the flow of illegal immigration.

Of course, all we got was a flood of even more illegal immigrants – with a healthy dollop of drug traffickers and criminals mixed in. Yes, Donald Trump will have a field day quite rightfully pinning that sin on “Billary” in the general election.

But what is likely to turn out far worse for Hillary is President Bill’s pivotal role in shoehorning Communist China into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001. I know this sad and sordid story all too well because I carefully documented it in my film Death By China – I was a Clinton fan before I did the research.

In that Death By China film, you can catch this astonishing clip of Clinton lobbying on behalf of Communist leaders who he, himself, had called during his 1992 campaign the “butchers of Beijing.” Here’s what Clinton had to say – and check out the companion video to this article for the whole story:

Economically, this [WTO] agreement is the equivalent of a one-way street. It requires China to open its markets with a fifth of the world’s population, potentially the biggest markets in the world. For the first time, China will agree to play by the same open trading rules we do. Never happened before. For the first time our companies will be able to sell and distribute products in China made by workers here in America.

The only question for voters in 2016 is whether Bill Clinton in 2000 was naïve enough to believe such nonsense. Alternatively, was he cynical enough to just flat out lie on behalf of his well-heeled corporate contributors intent on offshoring America’s manufacturing base at the expense of US workers? Either way, there is this grim political reality for Hillary:

Because of her husband’s ill-considered WTO deal, the good old USA has had to endure a tsunami of illegally subsidized Chinese exports, the closure of over 50,000 American factories, the creation of a huge American army of the permanently angry and unemployed, and a crushing debt of several trillion dollars to a communist country now rapidly using those Made in China dollars to build up a military with the clear intention of seizing territory from its neighbors in the East and South China Seas and pushing the American navy out of the Western Pacific.

If an image of Kevin Costner in the classic film “No Way Out” just flashed into your mind, well, that’s exactly the situation Hillary now finds herself in. Bernie Sanders knows it – he voted against both NAFTA in 1993 and President Bill’s WTO deal in 2000 and “man of the people” Bernie now has the very clear moral high ground here. That’s why Sanders is prominently featuring a crackdown on China’s unfair trade practices in his raise the roof populist campaign – and exactly why he upset Clinton in Michigan, which has been particularly sliced, diced, and flayed by the Chinese.

Donald Trump has taken an even more sophisticated approach to politically leveraging the China issue. He has been as clear about the myriad ways in which China uses unfair trade practices to cheat America as he has been resolute about the need to impose stiff defensive tariffs to countervail China’s illegal export subsidies, currency manipulation, sweat shop labor, pollution havens, and rampant intellectual property theft.

As the final nail in Hillary’s trade coffin, there is her well-publicized flip-flop on the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. First, she said the TPP “set the gold standard in trade agreements.” However, once Bernie backed her into a corner and her “coronation” looked more like a quagmire, she reversed her position – reaffirming that strain of political opportunism that seems to infect the Clinton DNA and reinforcing public mistrust of Hillary on the trade issue.

At the end of the day, the 2016 presidential race should come down to the single most important triad of inter-related issues on voter’s minds – jobs, the economy, and trade. If the race plays out as it should – rather than as a mud fest clash of personalities – Bernie may yet overtake Hillary at a contested convention. If not, Donald Trump will surely defeat “Billary” because Trump is far more credible on all three points of this economic compass.

4 Questions to Reshape Your Life

We go at it day after day. The routine is tiresome, at best, At worst, it is exhausting, even debilitating. In our daily haze, we become numb to life: we stop feeling the world the way we should. Our emotional intimacy with the people and experiences around us dulls down and with it, our joy. We become less aware, less conscious of our intentions, thoughts, and actions. Inevitably, it happens to us all. Frustration and impatience take the place of mindfulness, and this is the point at which we have to stop, remind ourselves of our purpose, and re-strategize.

If you’re seeking to reshape your life, reflect on the answers to these four questions to increase your awareness, expand your mindset, and change your outlook:

What thoughts do you keep thinking? Ever notice that the more you think about something, the harder it becomes to get your mind off of it? That’s because the neurons in your brain form clusters around your thoughts. You’ll continue to think the thoughts you’re used to thinking because there’s increasing traffic on those neural pathways. Like every other part of your being, your brain acts on habit and becomes programmed to operate in a certain way. And like a broken record, the thoughts usually repeat the same form and produce the same results. This can be detrimental to your wellbeing if you’re embedded in thoughts of fear, hatred, vindictiveness, or despair. When you think about something, do you think about it with any of these emotions? Are you constantly worried that something will go wrong? If fear is the first element that’s sparked in your brain, you will act on that fear and hesitate, unable to make sound, firm decisions. Desperation will lead you to make the wrong decisions entirely. It’s imperative that you sort through your thoughts and take control over what you keep thinking. Contrary to what many believe, you can change your thoughts! You can shift their course as they’re forming simply by paying attention: when you catch that recurring, destructive thought popping up again, force it out of your mind. Visualize a different circumstance or scenario, one that’s more in your favor. In time, the neurons will link around the more positive thoughts you’ve taught yourself. Remind yourself: The things that I’m afraid of haven’t happened and they don’t need to happen.

To whom are you listening? Are you obeying the voices of other people, or are you heeding the voice of your intuition? If your relationship with yourself is strong enough, you won’t have to rely on the often misleading opinions of others. You’ll think twice before you follow what everyone else is saying and doing. Your best guidance will radiate from within. Realize who and what is influencing your decisions. Also ask yourself if some of the things you’re doing are for others or for yourself. Do they meet your ultimate good, or are you settling and sacrificing time after time? Finding your authentic self is nothing short of miraculous: it is a birth of your own truth. When in doubt, introspect: Are my choices satisfactory to me or to someone else? What do I honestly want to do?

What is your first reaction? What is your first reaction to an unpleasant situation? Do you immediately want to run away or immediately want to resolve the problem? Your initial reaction indicates your dominating emotion: anger, anxiety, irritation, etc. Ultimately, you want your primary response to be understanding, acceptance, and faith. Understand the greater reason, no matter how bad the situation seems. Accept the outcome as a catalyst for your personal growth. Have faith that regardless of what has happened, you will come out of it better than before. This allows you to skip the negative, confusing, and stultifying emotions and reach a resolution to whatever problem may be at hand. Take nothing personally if someone’s done something bad to you. Remember that people are dealing with their own issues that you know nothing about. Acknowledge that throughout life you’ll feel disappointed just as often as you’ll feel pleased. There is nothing that can’t be resolved through this simple sort of logic.

How do you regard others? What is your attitude towards others as you weave through the world from day to day? Do you feel a general sense of disappointment in humanity, or do you still believe in the goodness of others? Do you avoid making eye contact whenever possible or strike up a conversation with a stranger? The way you regard others speaks volumes about what’s brewing inside of you. If you’ve shut yourself in, it’s time to gently open up again. The problem is that it only takes one person to ruin your trust in everyone else. People will continue to draw out of the same old habits you’ve worked very hard to erase. They will try to open wounds you’ve diligently healed. But that shouldn’t halt your progress: you must evolve for your own sake, not for anyone else’s. If you’ve lost your sense of confidence in others, understand that there are still many kind-hearted, likeminded folks out there just like you. Cynicism will only lead more untrustworthy people to you. But the more that you continue being a good, genuine person, the more you will be able to forgive those who have wronged you and find the right sort of company.

The only two things you need to reshape your life are desire and awareness. Let the answers to these four questions be your motivation towards greater mindfulness, strength, and joy.

To your best life,

9 Common Characteristics of People Destined for Greatness

Are successful people born or created?

We all carry the capacity to become successful. We’re all equipped with our own special gifts and talents. But some of us lose our path a long the way. Life can be a cruel teacher. We learn to stop dreaming and start being realistic.

People who become great break past the thinking society tries to place on them. They follow their dreams, accomplish something great, and leave their observers in a state of envy and awe.

What makes them different? Are there common traits of people destined to make a dent in the universe? Absolutely. Even if you don’t posses these traits right now they can be learned and applied.

Here are the traits of people destined for greatness.

They’re Not Humble

In the normal sense of the word. Most people pretend to be humble on the outside. Outward humility means that you don’t come off as cocky and try to appear modest. But on the inside you’re as arrogant as can be , because you feel like you deserve a better life but aren’t willing to work for it.

People who become great are humble on the inside. They put in the work. They practice. They learn everything that needs to be learned about their craft.

They’re Irrational

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” — George Bernard Shaw

People destined for greatness aren’t considered rational or realistic by society’s standards. Instead of blindly accepting what others tell them, they make the decision to form their own unique path. They’re the type of people who believe reality can be shaped in their minds.

They Don’t Believe In Inspiration

“I only write when I am inspired. Fortunately I am inspired at 9 o’clock every morning.” — William Faulkner

People on the path to greatness realize they won’t be feeling up to do the work each and every day. There will be days where you want to sleep in, avoid doing your work, or keep yourself distracted.

Don’t fall prey to the passion myth. People seem to have this idea that finding work you love to do is supposed to be fun one hundred percent of the time. No matter how much you love what you do, there will be tasks you dislike and days when you feel uninspired.

If you’re consistent and develop the ability to follow through you’ll be miles ahead of the pack.

They Don’t Live Balanced Lives

Your ability to prioritize time will determine how productive and effective you are. People who are on the path to greatness don’t spend their time democratically. They know how to say no to unimportant things in order to make time for their work. Yes, time with family and close friends is important, but after that comes work and nothing else.

Work-life balance is overrated. You don’t need a vacation, you need a vocation. When you find the work you’re meant to do you won’t want to take time off.

They’re Lucky

Successful people do, in fact, get lucky sometimes. They’re lucky because they put themselves in a position to be lucky.

There are two types of luck:

  • Blind luck – An example of blind luck is winning the lottery.
  • Purposeful luck – This is the type of luck where you’re spending your time growing, learning, and connecting with people. You “luckily,” happen to meet your future mentor, business partner, or investor in your company.

Opportunity mixed with preparation creates luck. When you’re determined to become great opportunities will present themselves and you’ll be prepared to seize them.

They Know That Personality Traits Can Be Learned

Some people are naturally charismatic and confident. If you aren’t a natural at these things it doesn’t mean you can’t learn how to develop these traits. Social skills are important when it comes to being successful. You’re likely going to have to talk to actual people in person to help spread your ideas and build the network you need to succeed.

You can join your local toastmasters club to work on your speaking skills. Top professionals have been known to take acting classes to build confidence and charisma. There are coaches and courses that teach you how to build confidence and charisma.

Do you have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset? Don’t fall into the trap of believing you’re limited to the personality traits you were born with.

They Visualize Their Success To The Point Of Certainty

Basketball players are trained to visualize their free throws going in before they attempt them. Golfers have been known to play entire courses in their head over and over again before they step on to the green. Your imagination and belief in yourself carry you towards your destiny.

One of the most difficult parts of following a lofty dreams is believing you can do it. Doubt will creep in every time you imagine yourself living out your dreams. But over time (and coupled with actual work) you’ll become certain of your vision.

Your imagination and vision will keep you going during tough points on your path.

They Ask Great Questions

Don’t say, “I can’t afford it.” Ask yourself, “How can I afford it?” Challenge yourself by asking this question instead of acquiescing and saying you can’t. You’ll be better for it. You’ll seek out and find solutions where you thought none existed before. – Robert Kiyosaki

People destined for greatness know that there is a solution to nearly any problem as long as you ask the right questions. Most people fail to think when faced with a difficult situation. They’re resigned to their circumstances. If you want to be great you need to figure out how to be great. You figure it out by asking great questions.

They Never Fail

People on the path to greatness don’t believe in failure. They make mistakes. Things don’t always go their way. But they treat everything like an experiment. In an experiment you form an educated guess based on your research. Then you test it. If the experiment goes south it’s not a failure –your hypothesis was just wrong. The experiment likely gave you valuable feedback for the future. A good scientist continues to conduct experiments until they make a breakthrough discovery.

Think of yourself as a scientist and run experiments. This blog post is an experiment in gauging what people get value from reading it. Your life is an experiment in figuring out what makes you feel fulfilled. You’re only a failure when you stop seeking answers.

The ‘Out-of-Control’ Election

My little campaign to make critical thinking education a component of this year’s election conversation might seem quixotic, if not completely unnecessary.

After all, why study argumentation and argumentation analysis when we can tune into an official debate every week which will be followed by immediate analysis by paid experts, with analysis by unpaid experts and non-experts offered second-by-second, tweet-by-tweet before, during and after each debate occurs?

In fact, we don’t even need to focus on Presidential politics to see high-stakes argumentation we can all plunge into. A brief dip into the news flow this morning, for instance, alerted me to a heated controversy over which public restrooms are appropriate for the transgendered, which seems to have triggered meaty debate over how to balance civil rights with religious freedoms.

But are those participating in these debates or analyzing them really thinking about the issues they raise critically, or even thinking about these issues at all, vs. using them to pursue an unspoken agenda?

For instance, before any of the Presidential debates you may have watched this year began, all of the candidates (even the less-scripted, shoot-from-the-hip ones) consulted with countless experts: pollsters, psychologists, writers, media advisors, statistician and electoral tacticians to determine which combination of words and gestures directed at which constituencies were likely to help the candidate achieve their genuine goal (which, for Republicans, means getting to 1,237 supportive delegates, for the Democrats 2,382).

Certainly questions come up during debates (as well as interviews) that ask the candidates to address the important issues this election is supposed to be about. But those aforementioned experts have also taught their clients rhetorical techniques needed to appear to be answering someone’s query while actually using their interrogator’s questioning as an excuse to slip in a set of words crafted days or weeks in advance.

Similarly, I suspect that a solution to a transgender restroom problem I never knew existed can be solved without having to organize into armed camps squatting beneath banners of Martin Luther King and Jesus Christ. But, once again, the arguments we are having over LBGQ civil rights and religious freedom is not really about trying to find an accommodation between these two potentially competing goods. Rather, it is an attempt to force people who care about such matters to pick sides behind leaders ready to cast their opponents as either Bull Connor using bullwhips against civil rights marchers or Nero throwing Christians to the lions.

While the winners in this manipulation sweepstakes tend to be those who want us to do what they say or buy what they sell, “we the people” are far from innocent when it comes to mistaking faux argumentation designed to limit thinking with the genuine article that requires us to challenge ourselves to think more deeply about things that might make us feel uncomfortable.

After all, those pollsters and consultants and psychologists would not be in business if the tools and services they sell didn’t work. And they can only work if these specialists not only think they have our number, but actually have it.

That said, one positive result of the chaos that has enveloped this year’s race is that it demonstrates the public is not as predictable and controllable as everyone assumed – including those who spent tens or hundreds of millions of dollars trying to predict and control us.

Theoretically, this year’s nuttiness might just demonstrate that the only thing which can counter professional manipulation techniques are less professional ones, like good old-fashioned demagoguery. But I see a ray of optimism in the fact that most of us have the capability to spot the kind of manipulative behaviors I’ve been talking about – at least when we see them in people we never could stand in the first place.

The trick will be to learn the tools and techniques needed to spot faux thinking masquerading as the real thing in both our opponents and those we are inclined to agree with, especially ourselves.

3 Things I Needed to Hear When I Weighed 300 Pounds

2016-04-01-1459545657-5764512-beforeafterracepic.jpg

The size of my body was a daily burden to me.

Some days, it was the frustration of not being able to find clothes in my size at department stores. It was an epic excursion just to find a simple white button down blouse and black slacks to wear to work as part of the required uniform.

Other days, it was the physical exhaustion and pain of doing manual labor at my workplace and carrying around an extra 150 pounds all day (every day) while my average-sized co-workers assumed I was lazy for taking more breaks than them.

And on especially low days, it was the feeling that the only kind of man who’d ever be interested in me was a freak or total loser. Who could be attracted to and fall in love with a woman who couldn’t even see her own vagina without a handheld mirror? I accepted that any flirtation that happened with the opposite sex would never end with a real relationship.

These were just a few of many reasons I sought comfort in food and alcohol and suffered from mild depression since the age of 10. It was the judgment from others, how much harder life felt for me because of my size, and the fear that I would grow old alone.

At that time in my life, it was impossible to hear messages that claimed I just needed to love my body more, be nicer to myself, and trust the process. I was in such a low place of despair most days that it only made sense to either accept my body size as a life sentence or bully myself into trying fad diets and damn near starving myself in the process.

When I started my last weight loss journey seven years ago (weighing 300 pounds), I wish someone I trusted and respected had told me these three little-known truths that would have saved me a lot of heartache and frustration:

Everyone thinks they have it the hardest.

All of us have something that holds us back and makes life harder. For me, it felt like I was destined to be morbidly obese for the rest of my life because my entire family was. I wasn’t a genetic rock star. I also felt like I couldn’t get healthier because I was living paycheck to paycheck and couldn’t afford a gym membership or healthier foods.

Some folks have family responsibilities that take up a lot of time and energy, the stress of studying for school exams, hormonal issues with the thyroid or PCOS, or other genuine physical limitations and disabilities. We all have something that makes reaching our goals more difficult. It’s easy to forget that when you’re in the trenches of trying to improve your life.

When you’re ready to start making big changes, barriers will come up left and right. Sometimes, they will seem like the truth and sometimes they’ll just sound silly. It’s a test. You have the choice to allow those obstacles to continue to hold you back, or you will find creative solutions around them.

The best thing you can do is be truthful with the excuses you make for yourself right now, instead of thinking about what your ideal self can do. I know my ideal self would be able to workout in front of her television to a fitness DVD, prepare all of her meals fresh each day, and have a never-ending supply of energy. My real self needs to join a gym for variety and accountability. She also needs to prepare some of her meals ahead of time or rely on a few pre-made meals from the freezer section of the grocery store. She’s also going to be tired at the end of the day, so she needs to recognize that her willpower will be depleted and will need to set up a plan to avoid making poor decisions after 5 p.m.

Some days, just showing up is good enough.

Fast sells. Complicated sells. A good majority of people have an all-or-nothing mindset–that’s why quick results are favorable and complex techniques are viewed as superior to what’s simple. It’s all about the marketing. It will also leave you feeling worthless when change doesn’t happen overnight, and you can’t keep up with the complex routine you’re supposed to follow.

Despite popular belief, you don’t have to plan out every little thing about your weight loss journey. It never goes according to your plans anyway. Unexpected events will come up, and you’ll need the flexibility to handle them. It’s okay to fail and even momentarily give up. The very best thing you can do for yourself is to get back up and show up again and again. You don’t have to give 110% at what you do. You don’t have to go hard or go home. The truly successful person knows this.

Perseverance can sometimes be painful, especially if you don’t see any noticeable rewards. It really is a lifestyle change. You have to be willing to be in it for the long-haul. Some days will be amazing. Some days will suck. The more you learn to enjoy what you’re doing, the easier it is to tolerate the crappy days and the lack of visible results.

By the way, this also applies to starting a business, becoming a new mother, going back to school, etc. Keeping it simple and sticking with it is the best advice for any challenging endeavor.

It’s OK to try.

I never wanted anyone to know I was trying. Trying to lose weight, trying to diet, or trying to exercise. To me, trying meant that I acknowledged I needed to change, and I needed help. And needing help was a sign of weakness. Just the thought of awkwardly pushing my big sweaty body through workouts in front of others made me squeamish and I dwelt on, “What will they think of me?” So, I foolishly delayed getting that gym membership for years.

When I finally took the terrifying plunge of joining a gym, I realized very quickly that no one seemed to care what I was doing. No one rolled their eyes at me. No one commented that I was sweating too much. No one said I should be lifting weights instead of walking on the treadmill. No one stared at my naked body in the locker room as I changed. No one said a damn thing. Everyone was focused on their own workouts and their own bodies.

Eventually, you’ll no longer see trying as a vulnerability. You will realize that it’s important for you to continue showing up and allowing people to see you’re trying. It helps others understand they’re not alone, and it’s okay for them to try, too.

Are you working on a weight loss journey and need to hear some words of encouragement? Leave a comment and let us know what you need to hear!

“Do you think you’d be able to manage such a large commission?”

In early November 2012, this was the question someone asked Hadley about the Montana State Capitol Building mural project. Hadley was the only Montanan – in fact, the only Westerner – in the group of three finalists, and her work was well known; so was her Parkinson’s diagnosis, because of her organization, Summit for Parkinson’s. Now, Hadley herself was wondering if it was reasonable for her to remain in the competition.

Later that day on the phone, Hadley and I mulled this over. On the one hand, she was so tired and slow-moving that it was difficult for her to imagine physically executing the mural if she were to win the competition. On the other hand, she still didn’t have a clear diagnosis and the finalist selection was a year off; she could be fine in a year, for all anyone knew. She decided to be optimistic and stay her course. If she were to win it, the mural commission would be the most exciting project of her career.

Hadley continued work on the Missoula Catholic Schools murals, grappling with her increasingly bothersome symptoms. Since all of her movements were slow and stiff, her dexterity was worse, climbing scaffolding to work on the large panels was becoming difficult, and she had trouble getting up from a squatting position without support. All it took for her to lose her balance was someone tapping her on the shoulder from behind. She fell several times, luckily without injury. In addition, she was struggling with focus and concentration and her field of vision seemed to be narrowing.

Fortunately, Hadley’s Missoula neurologist, Dr. Reid, was still very much in her corner. Dr. Bright’s diagnosis of Parkinson’s and Dr. Youngman’s dismissal of both Parkinson’s and MSA, and his embrace of upper motor neuron disease still didn’t make sense to Dr. Reid. She felt it was time to call in the big guns – the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The Mayo could take Hadley in late November and scheduled her for a series of appointments during a ten-day period over Thanksgiving. Hadley wanted John to stay in Missoula during her first week at the Mayo so that Sarah and he could spend the holiday as they usually did. John would join her the second week so that he could be with her at the important appointments summarizing the Clinic’s findings. To break up the stretch of time Hadley would be alone, I decided to fly to Rochester on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to be with her for a few days.

Rochester, Minnesota, five o’clock, late November 2012. Looking forward to our movie, Hadley and I paid for our mojitos and hustled out of the bar into the slipstream of the crowded mall. The drinks hadn’t been strong, but we must have appeared a little drunk anyway, with our awkward walks. For both of us, maneuvering through crowded spaces had become trickier. To make matters worse, for diagnostic purposes, Hadley had stopped taking levodopa for the duration of her time at the Mayo. I could tell she was concentrating hard on not running into the racks of scarves and hats and people swimming toward us in their fat coats and boots.

But at least, unlike me, she knew where we were going. Many times in the past six days she’d traversed the underground arteries that branch from the mother ship Mayo; they minimize a person’s contact with Rochester’s harsh winter temperatures that average between 12 and 27 degrees. Fast food, fast souvenirs, fast art – in the mall, they’re all available for the 35,000 people who work at the Mayo and the thousands of patients who are killing time between heart-pounding visits to the medical specialists who’ll send them back to Riyadh or Rome, Marseille or Missoula with the most costly souvenir of all: a diagnosis that will change their lives.

The teeming tunnel spewed us into the lobby of the Mayo. I took a deep breath as the soaring glass curtain wall lifted the compression in my chest. The Gonda building is the newest in the 3.5 million square foot medical center and has the ambiance of a five-star hotel or corporate headquarters; a sea of beige marble, bronze statuary and medusa-like glass Chihuly sculptures make it easy to believe that it really is The Best Medical Center In The World. On Monday morning, Hadley and I would be back here at nine a.m. for her appointment with the movement disorders specialist. But now, we were just passing through to the garage, hoping to get to the movie on time.

I climbed into the driver’s seat of a rented red Chevy Impala and Hadley sat next to me, navigating with her iPhone. The Galaxy 14 Theater was 5 ½ miles south on route 63, a road lined with warehouses and malls, devoid of landmarks – unless you counted Target, which I soon learned people there do.

Hadley was subdued. Finally, she asked, “Do you want to hear what that one doctor wrote in her report about me?”

I did. Hadley scrolled through her emails on her phone. Mayo reports are sent to the patient within a couple of hours after each appointment. Hadley had told me that the first doctor she met with six days ago, a general neurologist, had given her a “probable” diagnosis of multiple system atrophy. But the next day, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist reported inconsistencies in Hadley’s exam that might suggest she didn’t have an organic disease at all. This was the report that was bothering Hadley.

“I felt like she was trying to trick me,” Hadley said. “Listen to this: ‘Though she has definite organic problems, she has inconsistencies on her examination. During handwriting, she wrote small, but she has excellent coordination and grasp/relax of the pen. While I was typing my notes, she was toying with the ring on her finger, moving her fingers in a normal and fairly rapid way without difficulty that seems very different than her formal exam findings. She has broad based ataxic, stiff-legged gait with decreased arm swing and very turgid trunk and pelvis. However, her gait as she left the examination room was at least 50% better than during the exam.'”

Hadley slapped her phone down on her lap. “In a half-mile, take a left turn,” the phone instructed us. “You see what I mean? It’s like she was looking to trip me up.”

“Wait,” I said. “Read it to me again. I think I know what you mean, but I need to hear it again.”

When Hadley had finished reading, I understood; the doctor clearly had been looking for contradictions in Hadley’s movements. Why? I wondered.

“That whole thing about me having a better gait when leaving the exam?” Hadley said. “Of course I did. She had me walking back and forth in this tiny room, every two steps having to turn, and turning is always hard for me. When the appointment was over, I got to walk straight out the door, which is a whole different thing.” I knew this difficulty Hadley was talking about; changing directions when walking can often feel precarious to me. “And when she was watching me twirl my ring?” Hadley went on. “That’s a small repetitive movement, a habit like a twitch almost, completely different from the bigger hand movements she’d asked me to do. Also, my decent coordination with the pen is because I’ve been working with an occupational therapist on my grip so I can keep painting.” Hadley sighed. “But she believes all this is proof that it’s all in my head. It’s like she’s saying, ‘Gotcha! It’s functional!'”

“Functional” was clearly the hot-button word for Hadley, but I wasn’t familiar with it.

“It’s a movement disorder brought on by psychological causes, not organic,” Hadley explained.

“Listen to this part – she’s so evil! ‘Alert, appropriate affect, excellent historian. Admits I am not the best patient.’ Totally out of context!” Hadley says, before reading on: “‘She was told she had Parkinson’s disease and had been pretty comfortable with that until this summer when things changed. She has moments when she is very overwhelmed. She expresses a lot of self-doubt. Depression is likely. She may need further psychological evaluation and counseling relative to the functional overlay.'”

Hadley groaned. She was flushed and furious. She suspected this doctor’s report had biased the movement disorders specialist she saw the next day who wrote in his report:

Impression:
Gait disorder and rigidity. The patient has a very unusual exam. This is not a classic disease of anything. I agree we need to consider things like stiff person syndrome and primary lateral sclerosis. I am not comfortable with the diagnosis of multiple system atrophy. I find the signs of her parkinsonism to be unusual, and I think a functional etiology needs to be in the differential diagnosis for her problem.

It seemed MSA and PD were no longer even on the table, having been blown off by the gust of a suggestion: functional movement disorder.

I found myself thinking again about Munchausen syndrome, in which a patient invents symptoms and travels from doctor to doctor, changing her medical story. Could this “functional” word suggest something like that? I didn’t buy it. Once again, I felt indignant on Hadley’s behalf. Despite the fact that no doctor in recent years had doubted she was afflicted with an organic disease, I could see her confidence was shattered and she was in the grip of all the memories of doctors who hadn’t taken her symptoms seriously.

Hadley’s phone announced that we’d reached the Galaxy 14. We parked in the nearly empty parking lot and the insides of my nose froze as we ambled toward the theater’s entrance. Inside the huge, red-carpeted lobby there were only the ticket seller, popcorn scooper, soft drink dispenser, Hadley and me. I ordered some popcorn for us, trying to cop some much-needed feeling of fun. I began to worry whether the movie would be okay for Hadley. Although there were fourteen theaters in this one building, we’d only considered two of the movies playing, deeming the others too stupid, too violent or too sad. We’d finally nixed the Bond movie for potentially being too stimulating after Hadley’s exhausting days at the Mayo. That left “The Sessions.” “Heartwarming” the reviews said, which to me sounded prescriptive.

There were three other people in the cavernous theater. Who would come to watch a movie about a man in an iron lung on a 14-degree Monday night? I wondered. Loneliness settled over me and I knew Hadley felt it, too. She pulled out her phone and it lit up her face like an old friend.

“The Sessions” is based on the true story of Mark O’Brien, a polio victim who spent most of his life in an iron lung. In his thirties, he hired a sex therapist with whom he could lose his virginity. The film was touching, poignant, but I wasn’t watching it through my own eyes, I realized ten minutes into it; I was trying to see it through Hadley’s. Could it be entertaining to watch someone else’s cruel medical plight when you were seeking a diagnosis for your own?

Hadley leaned into me. “I’m worried that after all this, I’ll leave the Mayo without knowing anything more,” she whispered. “What do you think of what the rehab specialist wrote?”

How could I possibly have imagined with everything on her mind that Hadley would be able concentrate on a movie? In my head, I tried to rationalize the doctors’ reports, reminding myself that this was the Mayo after all, and I should keep an open mind and let the professionals do their work. Besides, I hadn’t yet had a chance to research what this “functional” diagnosis really meant. But then my intuition blared: “functional movement disorder” simply did not fit Hadley’s case.

“Forget about that doctor,” I whispered. “She just has something to prove. No one will pay attention to her report.”

When Hadley laughed and said, “Right? Oh good,” I knew I’d said the right thing.

Still, she barely touched the popcorn. Occasionally, she checked her phone. Then for a while she seemed to settle into the movie. Helen Hunt sweetly caressed her disabled client; witnessing the movie’s intimate scenes in such an empty theater, I felt more like a voyeur than part of an audience. I wondered if Hadley was wondering, as I was, whether this man’s horizontal life was better or worse than her life would be. Was his condition or hers the worst thing?

Each time the caged man laughed, it signaled a little victory for humankind – a testament to how, if only for a moment or two, we can rise above even the most challenging circumstances.

Starbucks Customer Appalled After Label Reads: ‘Diabetes Here I Come’

If it was meant to be funny, it missed the mark.

A Florida man is speaking out after he says he received an especially tart message printed on his Starbucks beverage: “Diabetes here I come.”

The man, who didn’t want to be identified, told WJAX-TV that he found those words printed on his white chocolate mocha. It hit a nerve with him because two of his sisters have Type 1 diabetes.

“That first word just automatically brought the picture of both sisters in my head, and I was taken aback,” he told the local Jacksonville TV station. “Just the struggles they went through and all the doctor appointments they had.”

He wrote back on the cup: “2 of my sisters are diabetic, so … not funny.”

The St. Augustine store’s manager appeared surprised over the label and told the local reporter that they “definitely don’t condone” such actions and would look into what happened.

The customer said he believes that he was unfairly and inappropriately judged by a Starbucks employee and wants to make sure that it doesn’t happen to him or anyone else again. He noted that he didn’t personally go into the store to place the order, but had a co-worker pick it up for him as part of a group order.

A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed to The Huffington Post that the message had been printed in the store. Some online users suggested that the label had been written by a customer who was placing the order online.

“We strive to provide an inclusive and positive experience for our customers, and were disappointed to learn of this incident,” the company said in a statement. “We’ve since connected directly with the customer to apologize for his experience, and with our partners (employees) to ensure this does not happen again.”

That Starbucks beverages contain a lot of sugar — which in some cases can cause health problems – shouldn’t be a surprise. Some of their beverages have been found to contain more sugar than a milkshake.

A “grande” white chocolate mocha, which the Florida customer ordered, has 470 calories and 59 grams of sugar, according to Starbuck’s website.

That tops the daily maximum amount recommended by the American Heart Association. For men, it’s 45 grams (nine teaspoons) or 30 grams (six teaspoons) for women.

Sugar-rich diets can contribute to a number of health conditions, including diabetes, obesity and some cancers.

But according to the American Diabetes Association, high-sugar diets aren’t the only thing that can be blamed for the disease. When it comes to Type 1 diabetes — which the Starbucks customer said his sisters have — most people inherit risk factors from their parents.

“The myth that sugar causes diabetes is commonly accepted by many people. This is a complicated issue,” the ADA states on its website. “Eating sugar has nothing to do with developing type 1 diabetes. Type 1 is caused by genetics and other unknown factors that trigger the disease.”

However, the ADA warns that sugary drinks have been linked to developing Type 2 diabetes. As a prevention, they advise limiting sugar-sweetened beverages.

For those already living with Type 2, the association advises saving sweets and desserts for special occasions and keeping portions small when indulging.

But it’s not just the total sugar content people should watch out for.

“If you don’t have a lot of time when reading labels, simply look at the total carbohydrate in a food,” the association suggests. “The total carbohydrate includes starch, fiber, sugar and sugar alcohols. It is more helpful to check the total carbohydrate because it includes both sugar and starch. If you only look at the sugar content, you are not accounting for the starch in a food.”

Puerto Rico Governor Declares Emergency At Government Development Bank

Puerto Rico’s Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla declared an emergency at the island’s Government Development Bank (GDB) on Saturday, suspending its lending power and freezing most withdrawals as the bank struggles to avoid default on a crucial May 1 debt payment.

The announcement followed Garcia Padilla signing a law this week authorizing him to take steps to avoid receivership at the GDB, the U.S. territory’s primary fiscal agent, and prevent a run on the bank.

Puerto Rico faces $ 70 billion in total debt, a 45 percent poverty rate and a shrinking population. Garcia Padilla has said the GDB cannot afford the looming payment. While the island has defaulted on small debt payments in the past, a default at GDB would be the most serious yet.

This week’s order prevents GDB’s depositors, such as municipalities and public agencies, from withdrawing their money, except to fund essential services.

It also suspends minimum reserve requirements at GDB, and prevents the bank from lending money or making payments on debts that it guarantees.

However, Garcia Padilla declined to exercise his authority to declare a moratorium on GDB’s own $ 422 million May 1 debt payment, citing continuing restructuring talks between GDB and its creditors.

“The Executive Order establishes reasonable and necessary procedures to preserve liquidity at GDB and allow it to continue its operations for the benefit of the health, safety and welfare of the people,” he said in the statement.

The essential services still allowed for withdrawal, in order of priority, include certain federal funds, payroll, and money for police, fire, medical, education and disaster recovery operations. The order establishes a committee of top island officials to manage these disbursements.

Local efforts by GDB and other Puerto Rican debt issuers to reach a debt restructuring are running in parallel with plans in the U.S. Congress to draft legislation aimed at solving the island’s economic crisis, possibly by allowing it to restructure debt and putting its finances under federal oversight.

A new draft of that legislation is expected next week from the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources.

Some Puerto Rico bondholders have criticized Garcia Padilla’s emergency legislation, particularly the authority to issue a moratorium on any debt the governor deems necessary.

Daniel Hanson, an analyst at Height Securities, said in a note this week the law could draw lawsuits from creditors.

Rating agency Moody’s said in a note on Friday that it would define a non-payment at GDB as a default “regardless of (a debt) moratorium law’s provisions.”

Why You Should Spend Your Money on Experiences, Not Things

This article originally appeared on Entrepreneur.com

When you work hard every single day and there’s only so much money left after your regular expenses, you have to make certain it’s well spent. Spend your limited funds on what science says will make you happy.

The Paradox of Possessions

A 20-year study conducted by Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University, reached a powerful and straightforward conclusion: don’t spend your money on things. The trouble with things is that the happiness they provide fades quickly. There are three critical reasons for this:

  • We get used to new possessions. What once seemed novel and exciting quickly becomes the norm.
  • We keep raising the bar. New purchases lead to new expectations. As soon as we get used to a new possession, we look for an even better one.
  • The Joneses are always lurking nearby. Possessions, by their nature, foster comparisons. We buy a new car and are thrilled with it until a friend buys a better one–and there’s always someone with a better one.

“One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation,” Gilovich said. “We buy things to make us happy, and we succeed. But only for a while. New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them.”

The paradox of possessions is that we assume that the happiness we get from buying something will last as long as the thing itself. It seems intuitive that investing in something we can see, hear, and touch on a permanent basis delivers the best value. But it’s wrong.

The Power of Experiences

Gilovich has found that experiences–as fleeting as they may be–deliver more-lasting happiness than things. Here’s why:

Experiences become a part of our identity. We are not our possessions, but we arethe accumulation of everything we’ve seen, the things we’ve done, and the places we’ve been. Buying an Apple Watch isn’t going to change who you are; taking a break from work to hike the Appalachian Trail from start to finish most certainly will.

“Our experiences are a bigger part of ourselves than our material goods,” said Gilovich. “You can really like your material stuff. You can even think that part of your identity is connected to those things, but nonetheless they remain separate from you. In contrast, your experiences really are part of you. We are the sum total of our experiences.”

Comparisons matter little. We don’t compare experiences in the same way that we compare things. It’s hard to quantify the relative value of any two experiences, which makes them that much more enjoyable.

Anticipation matters. Gilovich also found that anticipation of an experience causes excitement and enjoyment, while anticipation of obtaining a possession causes impatience. Experiences are enjoyable from the very first moments of planning, all the way through to the memories you cherish forever.

Experiences are fleeting (which is a good thing). Have you ever bought something that wasn’t nearly as cool as you thought it would be? Once you buy it, it’s right there in your face, reminding you of your disappointment. And even if a purchase does meet your expectations, buyer’s remorse can set in: “Sure, it’s cool, but it probably wasn’t worth the money.” We don’t do that with experiences. The very fact that they last for only a short time is part of what makes us value them so much, and that value tends to increase as time passes.

Bringing It All Together

The temporary happiness achieved by buying things can be attributed to “puddles of pleasure.” In other words, that kind of happiness evaporates quickly and leaves us wanting more. Things may last longer than experiences, but the memories that linger are what matter most.

What makes you happier, experiences or things? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

The Top 10 Workout Songs for April 2016

Ladies rule the gym this month — with females out front on all but three of the month’s top tunes. The list also favors the poppier end of the musical spectrum. At the same time–even with these elements in common — there’s still room for a few surprises.

The most anticipated songs of the month are the new singles from Sia and Meghan Trainor. Collaborations also proved popular — with Zara Larsson and Fifth Harmony teaming up with MNEK and Ty Dolla $ ign, respectively. Lastly, from the fellows, you’ll find the latest from Pitbull, a remix from Coldplay, and a fast track from St. Lucia.

In short, what seems like a homogeneous playlist on the surface turns out to be a remarkably fluid mix of dance, pop, rap, and rock on further inspection. Moreover, it’s spring–when pop’s jauntiness returns after months of hibernation. So, it’s a great time of year for buoyant beats and an even better time to get outdoors. Here’s the full list — according to the votes logged on workout music site Run Hundred.

  • Pitbull – Freedom – 118 BPM
  • Zara Larsson & MNEK – Never Forget You – 73 BPM
  • Coldplay – Adventure of a Lifetime (Matoma Remix) – 112 BPM
  • Years & Years & Tove Lo – Desire – 126 BPM
  • Sia – Cheap Thrills – 90 BPM
  • Meghan Trainor – NO – 94 BPM
  • St. Lucia – Help Me Run Away – 158 BPM
  • JoJo – When Love Hurts (Hugel Remix) – 120 BPM
  • Fifth Harmony & Ty Dolla $ ign – Work from Home – 105 BPM
  • Tori Kelly – Something Beautiful – 93 BPM

This Woman Brought Her Stepdad To Tears With The Ultimate Thank You Gift

Kristin Russell’s stepdad Dave loved his Porsche 914 roadster, but he loved Kristin’s mom and their family a whole lot more.

When the couple married in November 1990 after four years of dating, Dave decided to use the money he’d been saving to restore the 1973 sports car to pay for their wedding instead. The roadster sat in a garage for years before it was eventually gutted for parts.

It wouldn’t be Dave’s last Porsche, though. When Father’s Day rolled around a few years ago, Russell, an Air Force captain based in California, gave her stepdad the ultimate gift: Using money she’d saved over two years during her deployment, Russell tracked down an identical Porsche 914 roadster in Arizona and had it delivered to Dave in Exton, Pennsylvania.

Dave’s filmed reaction to the surprise gift, now going viral thanks to a Facebook share by actor George Takei, is pure gold: Initially, he thinks the car belongs to someone else. When Russell tells him it’s his, he’s shocked.

“Get the hell out of here!” he shouts, before tearing up and embracing his stepdaughter, who he’s raised since she was three.

Russell told HuffPost that giving Dave the sports car was not only a long time coming, it was totally deserved.

“He was so funny and fun to be around when I was growing up,” she said. “He would play Barbies with me, coach my sports teams and always asked tons of questions about my day; he’s genuinely interested in what people have to say.”

Two years into owning the car, Dave still loves working on it, Russell said.

“He had a ton of old parts in the garage, so he added his own muffler and mirrors,” she told us. “He’s enjoying it as a project car — it’s 43 years old so it needs a little TLC. As soon as the weather gets nicer, I expect he’ll have it out a lot around Eastern Pennsylvania.”

Russell said the family never expected the video to go viral, but that Dave is especially glad that people responded to it.

“He told me on the phone the other night that if the video influenced people to do something kind, that’s great and that’s the real gift,” she said.
